But how can we be close to a Being who is beyond our understanding? Getting close to God is a little like getting close to your new neighbor. Pretend a boy your age moves next door to you. What do you do the first time you meet him? (
find out his name, his hobbies, and what he likes to do
)
T
hese facts give you a little bit of information to start from for your next conversation with him. Getting to know your neighbor is a little like getting to know God. You do so little by little; letting Him tell you more and more about Himself. How does God speak to you?
Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. (Jeremiah 33:3)
"...I WILL ANSWER THEE..."
God has many ways to speak to us about Himself. How many ways can you figure out?
- Isaiah 55:11 (His Word)
- Romans 1:20 (His Creation)
- Hebrews 13:7 (Our Pastor)
- Romans 1:19 (Our Conscience - this is a little harder to figure out)
Of course God is not like a new neighbor. He is much more than that. But because He is so kind and loving, He left Heaven to come to Earth and become a man like us.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER:
Because God is a Personal Spirit, you can be close to Him. It is important that we take steps every day to become closer to God, getting to know Him more and more. The primary way we can do that is through His Word. God tells us that as we take steps toward Him, He is already taking steps toward us (
James 4:8).
