NATIONAL FLAG DAY
On June 14th, National Flag Day honors Old Glory and commemorates the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777.
The holiday is a day that Americans show respect for the U.S. Flag and what it represents. Representing independence and unity, the Star-Spangled Banner has become a powerful symbol of Americanism and the flag is flown proudly.
While Betsy Ross has been given credit for stitching together the first American flag, there isn’t any sound evidence supporting the story. At the same time, there isn’t any to disprove it, either. Part of the conflict is there were several designs in consideration at the same time. There were many flag makers and more than one claim to the first. During Ross’s Revolutionary time, several standards were carried bearing red and white stripes and varying symbols where the blue field and stars now reside.
Another who laid claim to the first design was Francis Hopkinson. His request for compensation for his design was denied because others contributed to the design final design.
Since 1777, the design of the flag has been officially modified 26 times. For 47 years, the 48-star flag was in effect. In 1959, the 49-star version became official on July 4. President Eisenhower ordered the 50-star flag on August 21, 1959.
Seventeen-year-old Robert G. Heft of Ohio designed the 50-star American flag. His was one of the more than 1,500 designs that were submitted to President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
ARMY BIRTHDAY
Every year on June 14th, the United States Army celebrates its creation in 1775.
Formed from amateur troops of volunteer soldiers defending colonies against British tyranny, the oldest military force in the United States began before the U.S. formally existed. Their forces consisted of mostly inexperienced militiamen commanded by independent colonial armies. According to battlefields.org, there were never more than 48,000 Continental soldiers at one time. Today, the United States Army consists of over one million active-duty service members and an additional 800,000 National Guard and Reserves members.
The enduring history of the U.S. Army means they have been integral to many of the United State’s military, peace-keeping and humanitarian efforts. During the Army’s Birthday, these and many advancements will be recognized through events and ceremonies.

Scatterjazz is thrilled and humbled to present a completely unprecedented musical conversation between one of the world's most renowned masters of the upright bass and two of New Orleans deepest jazz and funk treasures.
"Big Sam" Williams is a titanic force of New Orleans trombone, soul & groove, as the leader of "Big Sam's Funky Nation" and more.
Herlin Riley is part of the pantheon of modern drumming in New Orleans, always with both feet in the tradition and all eyes and ears driving irresistibly into the future.
“Calling contrabassist Mark Dresser a virtuoso is like saying Albert Einstein was good at math.

The Khris Royal Quartet featuring
Khris Royal, Conun Pappas, Max Moran and Trenton O'neal.
Khris Royal was born to be a musician. This young and exceptional New Orleans native began playing the saxophone at seven years old, and producing and writing music at fourteen. Royal’s musical talents were nurtured at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) High School, in classrooms once shared by jazz greats such as Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Terrence Blanchard, and Donald Harrison. When Royal was only 16, he was granted a full scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and his career has taken off since then.
To date, Royal has played with hip-hop giants and jazz and funk legends alike, from Lettuce, to Bobby Brown, Alvin Batiste, Ellis Marsalis, Christian Scott, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason Marsalis, Tony Clifton, The Sam Kininger Band, and Johnta Austin. The impressive young artist has recorded with Mary J. Blige, Ashanti, Nelly and The Game, Erykah Badu, Goapele, D.J. Quick, and is also featured with the Regiment on Season 2 of The Boondocks. Royal has developed relationships with prominent New Orleans artists as well, such as George Porter Jr., Zigaboo Modeliste, Fred Wesley, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Galactic, and countless more. The range of Khris’ musical relationships is versatile and reflects the scope of his talent. Although Royal continues to expand and develop his craft, from Jazz, hip-hop, rock, soul, electronic, funk, R & B, Blues, and Reggae –musically, there is not much Khris Royal has not already mastered and incorporated into his unique style.
In addition to leading his own band, Khris Royal & Dark Matter (see below), Khris Royal has been the only horn player in George Porter Jr. & the Runnin’ Pardners since Fall 2009. In 2011, Royal joined as a touring member of the popular West Coast rock/reggae band, Rebelution.

NATIONAL BOURBON DAY
On June 14th, National Bourbon Day recognizes the Official Spirit of America.
Like Scotch, Cognac, and some other spirits, Bourbon must meet certain standards and be produced in a specific geographical region to earn its name. Bourbon is a whiskey that can only be called by the word when it is distilled in the United States. For a distiller to legally label their whiskey as “Bourbon,” they must meet specific criteria.
  • The whiskey must be 51 percent corn.
  • The distiller must story the whiskey in new (not aged) charred-oak barrels,
  • They also must distill the whiskey at no more than 160 proof.
  • Finally, distillers must ensure the Bourbon is barreled at 125 proof.
This particular whiskey derives its name from the Kentucky county of the same name. Early settlers established the county in 1785 and were large producers of corn. Back then, once they distilled the corn, they put it in barrels stamped “Old Bourbon,” and shipped them down the Ohio River.
In 1964, a Congressional Resolution designated Bourbon as America’s native spirit. Since then, nowhere else in the world can make a whiskey and call it Bourbon.
Bourbon’s deep roots start with the immigrants who would homestead in Kentucky. With an abundance of corn, these pioneers set their stills to work, producing a whiskey that lives on today. They also put their own stamp on the quality and flavors into their whiskey. From the oak barrels to the rich soils, Bourbon’s character continues to grow throughout the years.

NATIONAL STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE DAY
National Strawberry Shortcake Day on June 14th each year lands at the peak of strawberry season. While we are able to get strawberries all year long now, the best strawberries are those picked from April to June. These bright red berries during this time are sweeter and more flavorful. By adding them to a shortcake biscuit or a sponge cake, strawberry shortcake is an easy and refreshing summertime dessert!
Strawberries are sliced, mixed with sugar then allowed to sit for about an hour until they have surrendered plenty of their juices. The shortcakes are then split, and the bottom is covered with a layer of strawberries, juice and whipped cream. The top is then put back on, and more strawberries, juice and whipped cream are added to finish it off.

“The J.D. Salinger of demented music.” Weird Al
Classic songs like “Poisoning Pigeons In the Park”, “Masochism Tango”, “Vatican Rag” and harmonies of the Periodic Table harken back to when musical satire was fresh, smart and spirited.

Entertainment will be served up by Bremner Duthie: award winning performer of the Canadian Deep South, Claudia Baumgarten: multi-talented Magazine-costumed chameleon, Alfred Richard: energetic omnibus of stage, street and television, and Phil Melancon: lethargic lounge lizard of 88 Lowerline Street.

Four-week P.O.W.E.R. Plates Program Begins Thursday, July 1

NEW ORLEANS — Fidelity Bank and the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation (LHF) will celebrate women in the hospitality industry with their annual launch of P.O.W.E.R. Plates. The four-week celebration (beginning July 1) of women in the hospitality industry is part of Fidelity’s “Potential of Women Entrepreneurs Realized” (P.O.W.E.R.) program. This year, more than 25 women-led restaurants and are participating in the giving program. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and drive business to women-led restaurants in the New Orleans area during the summer slow time.

“The New Orleans hospitality industry and their workers are experiencing unprecedent stress this year. P.O.W.E.R. Plates mission is to help support this critical industry by driving business to the restaurants.” said Elizabeth Broekman, Fidelity Bank Vice President and Director of P.O.W.E.R. “In addition, we are raising awareness of the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation mission of supporting Louisiana’s hospitality industry workforce through this crisis.”

Registrants may also make a donation to support the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and Fidelity Bank will match the donation up to $2,500.

“Women in the New Orleans hospitality industry have a tremendous impact on not only our city, but our entire state,” said LHF Executive Director Jennifer Kelley. “Programs like Fidelity Bank’s P.O.W.E.R. program are crucial in bringing women to the forefront and highlighting their successes and P.O.W.E.R. New Orleans’
most luxurious hotel
 is opening next month
New Orleans, Louisiana, will soon welcome the Four Seasons to its roster of luxury hotels.

The highly anticipated property will open its doors to guests on 21 July 2021, in a modernist 34-story landmark building dating back to the 1960s.

Located at the end of Canal Street adjacent to the Mississippi River and near the city’s Central Business and Garden Districts as well as the world-famous French Quarter, the new luxury hotel will surely be a refined place to base oneself for a visit to the Big Easy.
The hotel will have 341 rooms and 61 suites as well as a spa, gym, rooftop pool and an observation deck on the 34th floor providing sweeping views over the entire city

New Orleans is known around the world for its dining, and the Four Seasons should do its new city justice with two restaurants of its own and a lobby-level bar.
Miss River is a restaurant helmed by chef Alon Shaya that will serve “an elevated take on New Orleans favourites, highlighting bold flavours and local ingredients,” according to the hotel’s website. It will also feature a “Food Stage,” where diners can watch their chefs performatively plate their dishes before serving.

Next up is a “signature restaurant” by chef Donald Link, on the fifth floor. It will have an outdoor dining terrace with views of the Mississippi. It’s slated to open in October of this year. Finally, the Chandelier Bar will serve up classic New Orleans cocktails under the direction of beverage manager Hadi Ktiri.

The upcoming Four Seasons New Orleans is a welcome addition for anyone looking for a high-end stay in the city. There are a few other five-star luxury properties, including The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans, but it’s likely the arrival of this hotel will raise the bar when it opens in July.

The 2021 Krewe Of House Floats was a wonderful way to have a COVID safe Carnival and SDCE raised enough money to build and stock the Champs Elysee Free Store and Library, located at Elysian Fields & Marais.
