That They May Be One
Offered by Karen Laroche

The more we know about the Fourth Gospel the more precious it becomes. For seventy years John had thought about Jesus. Day by day the Holy Spirit deepened in him an understanding of the things Jesus had said. So when John was near the end of his life, he and his community sat down to write and remember.

In the beginning of John's gospel, we hear John's bold thought of who Jesus is. John declares that Jesus is none other than God's creative and life giving and light-giving word.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:1-5,14)

Nearing the end of John's gospel, we hear John tell why Jesus came into the world to live, die and live again, " that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent... that they may be one, as we are one." (John 17:3,11b)

During my retreat work days, I often worked and prayed alongside an older man who like John of the gospel, had loved Jesus for a long time. At the end of our time together he would often pray, "Jesus we love you and you are worth living our lives for." Try to hear that in your head and then more deeply in your heart.

For reflection:
Looking at the scriptures above what word or phrase resonates with you? Consider writing it on an index card and keeping it with you throughout the day and then reflecting on it again at the end of your day.

As we come to the end of our reflections about the resurrection consider praying with and journaling on -Is Jesus worth living your life for?
