Climate Adaptation Short Course
Recap of Session 1
At our first session of the course, we went over the course goals & schedule, described the Adaptation Workbook process, and outlined a project that used the Workbook to consider climate change in their conservation area.

We also heard a bit more from you on the types of impacts you are seeing or expecting to see in your areas. A few items from session 1:

To prepare for our next session, please:
  • Review the Quick Start Guide to Climate Adaptation (listed also below).
  • Review as needed the list of 'Resources to get you started' (below) for background on climate science, carbon considerations for natural lands, and climate communication.
  • Consider a project site to use for your field activity.

Preview of Session 2
If you're feeling ambitious, you can preview some select regional materials on climate impacts and ecosystem vulnerabilities listed here. We'll discuss these more during Session 2.

We are using the Adaptation Quick Guide for Land Trusts throughout this course. The guide draws on the five-step Adaptation Workbook process to help you design and implement adaptation actions in your work, with a special eye toward stewardship activities.
Resources to get you started

This article (pg. 25) outlines some general principles of carbon management in forests and grasslands, with an emphasis on how land trusts can promote this value on their properties in conjunction with other goals. Read the article in the Land Trust Alliance's Saving Land magazine.

If you'd like a refresher on the basics of climate change or climate impacts on forests and grasslands, we'd recommend this series of 15-20 minute self-paced tutorials. They cover basic climate science and how it impacts those of us working in conservation and natural resources management.

In our first session, a few of you expressed interest in ways to reach different stakeholders regarding climate adaptation. The Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary used the Adaptation Workbook to select adaptation actions for their property, and produced a series of outreach materials targeted at foresters and landowners.
Additional Tools
As mentioned by a course participant, please check out The Nature Conservancy's Resilient Land mapping tool. The tool identifies areas of geophysical diversity that may provide more varied habitat as the climate changes. It does not explicitly incorporate future climate projections.
