Welcome to the 2022 Winter issue of Arts Ed Thread. This year marks the 5th year of the Arts Ed Thread. Each issue contains updates from Palmetto State Arts Education along with our partner organizations, to help you stay in the know about all things arts education in South Carolina.
Now I want to make sure that you are aware of an exciting new resource that PSAE has to offer you – The One Stop Workshop.
The One Stop Workshop is a virtual platform offering a “one-stop” source for professional learning on arts in education, offering content for both educators interested in arts integration as well as discipline-specific arts specialists. It was developed as part of ArtsGrow SC, a partnership between the SC Arts Commission and the SC Department of Education.
This on-demand professional development content is available 24/7 through the end of August of this year. It’s free! All you need to do is register. If you haven’t registered yet, be sure to do so now. And for those of you who have registered, be sure to check in over the next couple of weeks as new content is added.

On February 22, the JAAI will begin its 2022 series “Conversations in the Arts.” The new Joint Arts Administrators Institute will encompass both in-person and virtual events to capitalize on the power of meeting face to face as well as allowing for the convenience of the virtual world.
The 2022 Institute will begin with a day-long series of conversations on issues of interest as identified by principals and arts coordinators. These include such topics as recruitment and retention of arts teachers, scheduling, and program development and equity in the arts.
Be sure to join us on Feb 22nd to network and share with your fellow administrators as we all work together to increase understanding of what it takes to deliver quality, standards-based arts education and how to recognize what it looks like in the classroom.

Rising Stars Piccolo Spoleto 2022 |

Celebrate Our Young Artists! |
Applications for the 2022 Rising Stars Piccolo Spoleto Series are now available. In its 14th year, the series gives young artists the opportunity to participate in the high-profile venue of Spoleto USA Festival through its affiliation with Piccolo Spoleto.
|

|
Who is eligible?
- Students between the ages of 9 and 18 who are not full-time college students
- Students who are visual artists, actors, dancers, creative writers, and musicians (instrumentalists and vocalists)
A series of six programs, each program will feature 5-7 young artists and/or ensembles in a conversation and performance format. The programs will receive special recognition and be listed in the Festival program. All programs are presented at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church across from Marion Square on King Street in the heart of downtown Charleston.

2022 Annual Arts Integration Conference

Submit a Proposal
Share your ideas and experience and propose a session or workshop! Sessions are 60 minutes. 120-minute slots are available but must be approved by PSAE Conference Chair.
PSAE will recognize up to 12 proposals that best embody the theme with ½ price conference registration. Note: PSAE is unable to compensate or pay expenses or registration fees for presenters or others whose proposals are accepted.

SCAC’s District Arts Coordinator Grant awards up to $30,000 per year for 3 years to support school districts in establishing or expanding the role of the district arts coordinator to ensure the development and/or implementation of a rigorous arts learning strategic plan. Districts must submit a letter of intent to apply by 2/15/2022, please contact Kimberly Washburn-Motte for more information.

SCAC’s District Arts Support Grant awards up to $25,000 per year to support school districts committed to implementing standards-based arts curricula and to making the arts an integral part of the basic curriculum and daily classroom instruction. Districts must submit a letter of intent to apply by 2/15/2022, please contact Kimberly Washburn-Motte for more information.

For Arts Teachers
SCAC’s Arts Teacher Support Grant awards up to $3,000 per year to support innovation in arts classrooms by providing arts teachers at K-12 public, private, or charter schools access to one-time funding for professional development and/or classroom supplies, materials, and equipment. Upcoming application deadlines are February 7th and March 7th for spring projects, all grant purchases and activities must be completed by May 1st, 2022. For Community Partners
SCAC’s Term Arts Education Project Grant awards up to $30,000 ($15,000 per term 2022-2023 and 2023-2024, excludes summer) to support arts education programs for K-12 students during the school term, through traditional and non-traditional providers. For Teaching Artists
SCAC is hosting “The Business of Being an ArtsGrowSC Teaching Artist - Nuts and Bolts: An overview of what you need to know to improve your business as a Teaching Artist." This free PD opportunity will be held on February 22nd and 23rd from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm via Zoom. Please contact Amanda Noyes for more information about registering. ABC Project continues to grow in service of its mission to all SC students! |
Join us in welcoming Emily Prado, ABC Project’s District Programs Specialist! Her focus will be to build and support infrastructure for arts learning at the district level, with priority given to our districts without a designated Fine Arts Coordinator.
ABC Project will be seeking an Educator Programs Specialist to develop and strengthen our services and resources to individual educators. The position description will be available on the Winthrop University Human Resources website and applications will be accepted through Feb. 28, 2022.

The New Year Brings Guest Artist Experiences and New Teacher Resources |
We are excited to announce the return of our Guest Artist Experiences, giving your students an opportunity to work with teaching artists and Governor's School faculty in person or virtually. We understand that hosting guest artists can be expensive and field trips are not always an option, so our teaching artists and faculty can come to your school free of charge!

In addition, we want to invite you to take advantage of our free Virtual and Backpack Arts Activities that provide standards-driven resources designed to easily fold into any type of arts education setting—whether virtual, hybrid or in-person. Activities are updated monthly on our website, and we just added the following to our collection of resources:
African Dance: Tell Your Story
This pre-recorded resource allows students to explore, experience, and learn about traditional West African dance and witness how movement is inspired by everyday activities.
Writing Prompt Cards
Our Creative Writing faculty gathered some of their favorite prompts into a curated collection for easy classroom use! These index-sized cards feature short starters to help spur the imagination and focus writing direction.
Arts Advocacy for Educators
February 7-11 is SC Arts Advocacy, and this resource is all about advocating for the arts! In this digital handbook designed for educators, you will find Arts Advocacy basics, curriculum connections, and activities that translate directly to your classroom of choice.

AASC WINTER/SPRING RESIDENCIES
January 2022 - June 2022
ARTS ACCESS South Carolina (AASC) delivers arts experiences and arts educational services to students and adult persons with disabilities throughout South Carolina.
|
|
|
|
The arts education services include partnerships with schools and community organizations for the following: one-day-artists visits, multiple week-long residencies, workshops, afterschool programs, evening classes, and festivals. Programs will be offered in the following formats: hybrid, virtual, and/or face-to-face.
The AASC priority is to continue to practice Covid safety protocol in face-to-face formats. Programs are supported, in part, by the S.C. Arts Commission, which is funded, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts. Activities can be inclusive or self-contained. PLEASE NOTE: Our VSA Residency Program has been placed on pause for FY2022.
However, if funding becomes available, more than ever AASC seeks partners and leverages funding for the most vulnerable.

VSA International Youth Soloist Competition - 2.28.2022
Each year outstanding young musicians (ages 14-25) with disabilities from around the world receive the VSA International Young Soloists Award ($2,000) and the opportunity to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. This program is open to soloists and ensembles of all genres. VSA Playwright Discovery Program - 3.9.2022
Young writers (ages 15-18) with disabilities are invited to submit a "ten-minute script" of any genre for the opportunity to participate in a virtual playwrights program. Scripts may be for plays, musicals, multimedia, video, film, TV, podcasts, or other writing for performance. Winners will receive modest financial awards ($1,000) and have the opportunity to work with industry professionals to further develop their script, receive coaching/mentorship, and participate in networking opportunities. The third of four meetings for the ARTS ACCESS South Carolina (AASC) ADVISORY PANEL is scheduled for Thursday, March 17 at 12 NOON.
Participants from every corner of SC convened to CELEBRATE, LEARN, & SHARE their interest in serving populations limited in arts experience and gave a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to AASC. 36 years of serving people with disabilities, we continue to “cast a wider net” in order to leverage resources to be more Inclusive, more Diverse, more Equitable and even more Accessible (IDEA) in our practices to serve our most vulnerable populations of South Carolina.
