Don’t miss EPAC Youth Rally on Zoom this weekend!
Rally to feature music, messages and meeting of young minds

Due the COVID-19 pandemic the Eastern PA Conference Council on Youth Ministries (CCYM) has decided to reset its annual, planned Youth Rally as a two-day, online event, using Zoom videoconferencing. The dates and times, chosen by the CCYM youth, are Friday, August 21, from 8 to 9:30 PM and Saturday, August 22, from 3 to 4:30 PM.

We will have dynamic speakers, uplifting music and small group discussions on topics ranging from self-esteem and body image, to relationships and connecting with God, to prayer and strengthening our faith.

Our CCYM youth are excited to use technology as we engage other youth in discussing, experiencing and learning about our faith. We will enjoy soul-moving music by great Christian artists, and we’ll hear dynamic speakers who will challenge and help guide us in our various faith journeys.

Join Q&A online with Sen. Bob Casey, Aug. 28
The Rev. Dai Morgan, who coordinates United Methodist Advocacy in PA, announces an online question-and-answer session with Senator Bob Casey (left) for the faith-based community on Friday, August 28, 3:00-3:45. The sole topic of the 45-minute Zoom video-conference will be pandemic-related federal policy, programming and legislation. Morgan informed Bishops Peggy Johnson, Cynthia Moore-Koikoi and Jeremiah Park of the information-sharing opportunity, as legislative advocate for the three Pennsylvania UMC conferences.

Questions for Sen. Casey must be submitted beforehand and will be presented to the Senator by a moderator. All attendees will be muted. To register, send your name and email address to Morgan (daimorgan@comcast.net) by August 26. But he must receive questions for the senator by “no later than Sunday, August 24.”

“All Pennsylvania United Methodists who would find this to be interesting and useful are invited to participate,” said Morgan, cautioning that all questions must pertain to the pandemic. However, in that context, “they can relate to racial justice, education, immigration, non-profits, social welfare, etc.”
Lebo to head revamped Local Pastor School
2021 school to be offered on Zoom with flexible curriculum
The Rev. Dan Lebo, senior pastor of Gravel Hill UMC in Palmyra, is the new Dean of the Eastern PA Conference’s Local Pastor Licensing School, as of September 1. He succeeds the Rev. Gordon Hendrickson in that role. Lebo will register students for 2021 and lead in designing a new Licensing School program, set to launch in January. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, all courses in 2021 will occur via Zoom video-conferencing.

With a flexible curriculum, the new school will allow students to complete courses in as little as two weeks or up to six months at their own pace. A three-day retreat with faculty will initiate a new hybrid instruction model.

“We plan to offer the school two times per year,” said the Rev. Dawn Taylor-Storm, Director of Connectional Ministries, in informing the Board of Ordained Ministry of Lebo’s hiring. “We are working out details for the January retreat on Zoom.” Those details may be announced in early September.

The Rev. Dr. Dan Lebo, an elder, has served on conference and district Ordained Ministry boards. He is an adjunct faculty member and chaplain at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, where he previously served Annville UMC. He was also director of Innabah Camp & Retreat Center in 2013-2014. Lebo and his wife Rebecca have two daughters and are expecting their third child in the fall.

Yancey has served the district and the conference in this role since November 2017. He begins a new job at First UMC Germantown in Philadelphia in September.

The East District Superintendency Committee, chaired by the Rev. Jackie Stewart, is organizing the event. Join Zoom Meetinghttps://epaumc.zoom.us/j/93066636351 Meeting ID: 930 6663 6351. By telephone: +1 646 558 8656 US (New York)

New district staffing changes announced
The Eastern PA Conferences’ four districts will share two full-time District Resource Assistants (DRAs), plus additional part-time staff, as of September 1. The cost-saving, efficiency move follows the departure August 31 of Michael Yancey as East DRA and North DRA Sheri Kentner’s announcement of plans to retire December 31.

Kristin Reifsnyder will serve as DRA for the East and West districts. New DRA Deb Boyd will serve the North and South districts. Kentner will work as a General Resource Assistant until her retirement in December. She will have specific projects and also help the two continuing DRAs prepare to serve two districts each in their new working arrangement.

Each district will also have a part-time clerical staff assistant to handle phone calls, email, filing and other basic tasks for 10 hours a week. Christina Collazo will continue to serve the North District part-time with an increase to 10 hours a week. The conference will also hire one 10-hour-a-week clerical assistant for the South District, and one to serve both the East and West districts at 20 hours per week combined. All district offices are now located at the Conference Office in Valley Forge.

“As we move into the fall, five-day-a-week schedule, we will continue to work without a full staff in the building to,” announced Jo Fielding, Director of Administrative Services. “We will publicize by the end of August our schedule of when specific staff will be in the building.”
UM Lay Leaders urge laity to engage in social action
The UMC’s Association of Annual Conference Lay Leaders (AACLL) executive team has sent a letter to laity across of the U.S. church calling for their commitment to “love one another” and to work together to foster meaningful social change at a time when the nation and its churches are facing social dislocation and other existential challenges.

Eastern PA Conference Lay Leader David Koch, association treasurer and a member of the executive team, forwarded the letter, which he helped compose, to conference leaders today and urged them to respond and share it to others.

“We gathered in February optimistically anticipating a future guided by vision and filled with action,” says the letter. “We returned home to face a modern pandemic that has cancelled local, conference and denomination-wide activities.”

Association leaders cite the separation of congregations from their church buildings and church functions and from one another, thus posing a challenge to “how we meaningfully carry on our ministry and mission.” They also point to the recent spate of violence against unarmed Black citizens, especially by police, as evidence of “the sin of deeply rooted racism.”

“Pain, anger, denial and new realizations have further ripped the already frayed fabric of communities across the world,” the letter laments. “We have been called through our baptism to steadfast leadership in this time.”

“As laity we are 99.2% of the church, and our voices matter,” the letter continues, calling on laity to “take action and cause change….We cannot sit as observers…. We will not go back to normal. We cannot be silent. We are vital to the unfolding of God’s hope for us, to be people who hold one another and the communities around us, in love.

The association leaders call on their constituents to pray, to advocate for justice and mercy, to learn and also to “lead courageous conversations about this dual pandemic” of the virus and the violence.

“The season for change and transformation is NOW!” it closes. “In all our own places, let us follow God’s call.” Read the entire letter

Yambasu, 63, had many titles — bishop, chancellor of Africa University and president of the Africa College of Bishops.

United Methodist leaders from around the world mourned the bishop and praised his faithful leadership in bringing together a diverse group of United Methodists to collaborate on a proposed agreement for the separation of denomination. They also recalled his leadership during the worst Ebola outbreak in history, a deadly landslide and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. Read the full news story. Urgent appeal for our Peter Weaver Congo Partnership
We have all been impacted by the pandemic in the United States. During our own challenges, God calls us to care for others. Your Peter D. Weaver Congo Partnership continues to be a beacon of hope for the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo that has been devastated by the pandemic and other challenges, especially economically.

We are seeing a growing rate of malnutrition and starvation because people in remote areas are unable to grow their own food. Our lifesaving Partnership projects are needed more than ever. We endeavor to provide for the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs of our Congolese sisters and brothers.

The Partnership, which is supported by the Eastern PA Conference, now faces serious financial challenges which will require us to cut some of our life-giving projects if urgently needed funds cannot be raised. If every person and every congregation provided some financial support, God would take those gifts and multiply them so that we can support our Congolese mission partners in this time of great need. Cabinet to lead 6 conference prayer meetings

The conference Cabinet was invited to take the lead by the Rev. David Piltz, creator, coordinator and host of the ministry, and they accepted.

Now she and her appointive Cabinet, and new Connectional Ministries Director the Rev. Dawn Taylor-Storm, will become guest-hosts over the next two months.
