Accelerated Study Plans
Sent on behalf of Savannah Brown, On Your Time Initiatives
Do you have highly motivated and high achieving advisees who would like graduate in less time, or perhaps students with more downtime than they anticipated who would like to get ahead? Accelerated Study Plans are designed to help students do just that. By taking advantage of Summer Semester and Winter Session, as well as AP/IB credit, students can earn the same degree in fewer semesters. Lowering educational costs and getting a head start on graduate school or a career is a great financial benefit. There are ten fully mapped Accelerated Study Plan undergraduate majors to choose from, as well as seven bachelors + masters degree combinations. We’re adding more plans every semester, and students interested in an ASP for a major currently not listed can use the interest form to let us know. We’d love to hear from advisors, too! Email us at [email protected] to let us know what majors and programs you think would best serve your students as ASPs. For more information, please visit https://bit.ly/UofSCaccelerated .

Pre-Professional Advising for Pre-Law Students
May 28 from 10:00 - 11:00am
Presenter: Mark Brown, Office of Pre-Professional Advising
Pre-law students should be cognizant as early as possible in their college career of their intentions to go to law school. Students need to understand that the two most important law schools consider for admissions are grades (GPA) and the LSAT score. Law schools have no preference of majors or minors (and, we have students from virtually every major and minor apply, be accepted, and matriculate to law schools). While the majority of preparing for the application process starts late in the Junior year, and extends to fall of Senior year, there is much students can do from day one to become a great law school candidate. Advisors will gain an understanding of how to students interested in law throughout their college career.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understanding the law school application process and requirements.
2. Learning what is most important for law schools making admissions decisions.
3. Recognizing the versatility of majors/minors that students can use to prepare for law school.

If you have any questions about Training and Professional Development offered through the UAC, please contact Sara McConville directly at [email protected] .

Update on Fall 2020 PHYS Labs Waitlist
Sent on behalf of the Department of Phsycis & Astronomy
The Department of Physics and Astronomy will be moving forward with our standard waitlist for PHYS Labs in  Fall 2020 , which will be conducted in the same manner as in previous semesters. The links are now live!

Please encourage students to visit our  200-level PHYS Labs webpage  to submit an entry for our PHYS 201L, PHYS 202L, PHYS 211L, and PHYS 212L waitlists for Fall.  Students should expect to receive feedback regarding the possibility of additional seats in  August . Students should continue watching Self-Service Carolina regularly for open seats in the weeks and months to come.

We have also implemented a  "Remove" link  for students that previously submitted a waitlist entry. If a student manages to register for a seat in an open lab section after already completing a waitlist form, he/she can use the Remove link to let the department know that his/her request for a lab seat has been fulfilled.

Just a friendly reminder - students do not have to take the corresponding lab course in the same semester as the lecture course.  As long as the lecture is taken first, the lab can be taken in any future semester.

Also, we want to inform as many students as possible that we will be offering all 200-level PHYS lectures and their respective labs (201L, 202L, 211L, 212L) in Summer 2020 in an online format.  The lectures and labs do have specific days and times of the week where students will be expected to be available for class in real time.  They are not self-paced .

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Two New Courses in English
Sent on behalf of Ed Gieskes, Department of English
ENGL 280.001 LITERATURE AND SOCIETY TR 10:05-11:20 JELLY-SCHAPIRO (AIU/VSR)
Since the global economic downturn of 2008, capitalism has been subject to heightened levels of contestation in various public forums—from the streets to the ballot box to the television screen. This course will examine how works of contemporary fiction in particular register and reckon with the political, economic, cultural, and ecological crises of capitalism in the twenty-first century. Our inquiry will be planetary in scope. Taking us from Brooklyn to Milan to Bangkok, the novels we read will help us think about how global capitalism is constituted, experienced, and resisted in distinct spaces and places. Though privileging the current moment, we will also think about the connections between the early-modern origins and present-day iterations of capitalist culture.

ENGL 283.001 TOPICS IN BRITISH LITERATURE: HEROISM TR 1:15-2:30 SHIFFLETT (AIU)
In this class, we will explore British authors’ uses of sex and death to create their own renditions of beauty. Reading across centuries and genres to examine the uses to which sex and death combine to create compelling literary masterpieces, we will analyze how various authors engage their readers and the major issues of their historical moments. Beginning with John Donne’s strange seduction-by-bug poem, “The Flea,” and concluding with such contemporary works as Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, the semester’s reading includes classics and lesser-known wonders that press at the boundaries of what constitutes beauty. Assignments include reading responses, two short papers, a midterm, and a final exam.

During the Fall 2015, Spring 2016 and Summer 2016 semesters, temporary course codes were used for LING 102, LING 103 and LING 104.
