Glenbard West Community -
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. Yesterday marked the first day of the school year and everyone is excited to welcome the approximately 2400 Glenbard West students (virtually) back to school. I would like to put out a special welcome to our newest freshman students, the Class of 2024. This particular start of the school year is certainly not happening the way we might have expected. I know that our students, parents, and staff would much prefer to begin as a normal year with students joining the staff here in the building. Our commitment to safety and to serving our students made the remote start in all four Glenbard buildings absolutely necessary. Please know that our teachers and staff are committed to making the very best of our remote learning experience.
I want our students and parents to understand the level of commitment, expertise, and passion that our teachers and staff bring to the job every day. Last week, the entire staff participated in learning activities designed to enhance their practices around instruction, technology, collaboration, and equity. This year, in particular, we have emphasized the need to support with our students while they are doing their best to learn in the virtual world. Our teachers work hard to be student-centered and knowledgeable when it comes to blending instructional practices with technology.
My advice to all students is to do your very best to stay focused and organized while we navigate our way through this experience. Realize that all of your teachers are available to answer questions and address concerns. Additionally, our deans, counselors, and related services personnel are here to support you as well. It is imperative that you advocate for your own learning and growth as much as possible.
Information regarding the school can be found not only on our webpage but also via twitter (@GWHilltoppers) and also on our calendar. West is very lucky to have a number of parent groups whose mission is to support our students and help us run programs throughout the school. Please consider any one of these groups when looking to get involved:
My ongoing mission as principal is to continually create a strong, sustainable learning environment for all Glenbard West students. With our support, students will get through this. Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or concerns.
Go West!

2020-2021 School Year Testing Announcements:
Seniors: You were scheduled to take the SAT in April, but due to cessation of in-person instruction, this test was cancelled. Illinois has funded a fall SAT administration for all seniors, and it is believed that this will be administered on Wednesday, September 23, if we are able to resume in-person instruction. Please be aware that Illinois is still requiring all seniors to take a School Day SAT for graduation and this will fulfill this requirement.
Juniors: You are invited to take the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) on Saturday, October 17. This exam serves several purposes:
- It provides you with a good practice opportunity for the SAT which you will take on Wednesday, April 13 with your class.
-
It allows you to enroll in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. This is the qualifying exam.
More information about registration will come soon. Juniors will be offered an opportunity to take an SAT Prep Class offered at each high school during 2nd semester. A final and free way students can prepare for the PSAT or SAT test is through FREE individualized test preparation at the Khan Academy website (www.khanacademy.org/test-prep). Junior students will learn about this free offering at school. Parents and students can learn more about this free resource by watching a 10 minute video. More information about the PSAT test and the SAT test can be found at https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org.
Sophomores: An optional exam for you to take is the PSAT/NMSQT exam offered on Saturday, October 17. This exam will provide you with ongoing practice and feedback as you prepare to take the SAT your junior year. You will take a similar exam (the PSAT 10) on April 14.
Freshman: All freshmen will take the PSAT 8/9 exam on Tuesday, April 14. This is the same exam used for student placement in 8th grade, and allows students/parents feedback relative student learning and preparation for the SAT junior year.
College Board Account: All Sophomores-Seniors should have a College Board Account. This account allows students to enroll in their AP Class and register to take AP exams, view scores and track progress on the PSAT and SAT, send scores to colleges and universities. Directions on setting up individual college board accounts can be found here: Setting Up Your College Board Account Link
Advanced Placement: District #87 will pay the exam fees for one AP test for every student enrolled in AP Courses this year. All additional Advanced Placement Exam fees will be included in student registration this year. Students will register for their AP class/exam during the first two weeks of the school year using their College Board Account.

NEW! Simplified AP Fee Process & One Free Test for 2020-2021
We are excited to announce that we have simplified the AP exam fee payment process for the 2020-2021 school year. These changes will not only eliminate the need for families to create a login and pay test fees through a third party, but they will also mean that every student will have the opportunity to take their first AP exam at no cost!
New for the 2020-21 school year, AP exam fee exams will be charged to a student’s Glenbard fee account through the registration process in the summer, along with the other annual student fees. Our School Board has made the investment to defray the cost of the first AP exam for every student, so families will only be responsible for paying the AP exam fee for their student’s 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc exam each year. Families will have the opportunity to “opt-out” of the exam and fee by October 15, 2020 or February 15, 2021 for 2nd Semester only AP courses. After these dates, families will be responsible for a $40 unused/canceled exam fee after October 15, 2020 or February 15, 2021 for 2nd-semester only AP courses.

College Application Season!
Senior year is an exciting time, all those years of hard work culminating in the post-secondary decision-making process! We also understand the entire post-secondary/college application process can be a stressful one. Between visits, financial considerations, discussions on the right fit, and pressure put on you by the colleges themselves trying to get you to apply early, things can easily become overwhelming. Especially for many of our seniors who may be the first in their family to apply to college. To minimize your worries, West’s School Counselors are here to guide all seniors and their families along the way. This year the School Counseling Department will be releasing a senior video series to help guide them and families throughout each step of the way.
The first step in the college application process is all seniors and their parents completing the “Counselor Recommendation Form” and “Parent Input Form” respectively on Naviance under “About Me” and “My Surveys.” This valuable information will help support seniors’ letters of recommendation. Please refer to the School Counseling Senior Family Letter sent home through email and text and always feel free to reach out to your child’s counselor with any questions.
The second step will be counselors releasing a special “senior convo” video to discuss the college application process. We believe this, and additional information is also important for parents, so there will be another video/presentation shortly after to help guide families through the application process as well. After the senior convo and parent presentations, counselors will be meeting (virtually or in-person) with all seniors in small groups (and individually as needed), fully preparing all seniors for the major November 1st deadline. Stay tuned to your child’s Naviance account, future newsletters, and emails for additional information.
