7/29/2020 Weekly Update: Program Recap
by Ann Clark, Head of School

Dear Parents,

We have provided a great deal of information in the last couple weeks as we adapt to the changing guidance from county health authorities and state government. We recognize the needs and concerns within our VMS community vary and, where possible, we have added programs to accommodate these needs. Here is a recap of each:

Toddler and Primary Programs :
We look forward to welcoming back to VMS all of our toddler and primary children that want an on-campus experience. Since these programs fall under Community Childcare Licensing, we are able to provide them with strict safety protocols in place. Children will be grouped in cohorts of 12 or less.

Primary Distance Learning Program
For families who are not ready to have their primary children back on campus, we are providing a robust Distance Learning program. There will be specific teachers assigned to this role. Those interested may sign up through 5pm Thursday, 7/30.

Distance Learning for Elementary through Middle School
For the balance of our community, as mandated by the state of California due to Covid-19 concerns, we will provide a comprehensive Distance Learning program for each grade first through eighth. Based on parent and staff feedback, as well as best practices for online learning, we have enhanced our programs from the spring and have dedicated teachers assigned at each level.

Childcare While Participating in Distance Learning
Just last week, we learned that we are able to offer limited Childcare for VMS Elementary and Middle School students while they participate in Distance Learning. This will provide a place for students to do their distance learning while being supervised by VMS staff, allowing their parents to return to work. These students will be grouped in cohorts of 12 and adhere to all Covid-19 safety protocols. Due to overwhelming response, this childcare program is full. Those who applied will receive confirmation of acceptance tomorrow afternoon, 7/30.

Setting Up Your Child for Success
Whether your child is on campus or participating in distance learning, we are committed to providing the best possible learning experience for your children and support for you as we partner in this process. We will be providing guidance along the way, but here are a couple key things to keep in mind:

  • Montessori philosophy recognizes that each child has an innate sense of curiosity which propels their learning and makes it their own. Following a child’s individual curiosity ignites creativity and spurs meaningful work, engaging them in a deeper level of learning. This can easily be done at home as well as in the classroom. Begin conversations by asking questions and spark curiosity.

  • If you are at home, it is essential to establish a routine that works for your family. What this looks like will vary from home to home, but keep in mind, if it does not work for your family it will not work for your child. Set up their work space together with materials readily available for them.

Thank you again for your commitment and partnership in creating a positive and successful experience for your child. Please check your email frequently, as updates and requests for information will be sent as we get closer to the start of school. As always, we will continue to provide updates in the Wednesday News then post those updates on the VMS Website for easy reference.

Respectfully,
Ann
