Theme Verse for the 2020-21 School Year

Need to Know
First Day of School on Tuesday, August 25th
The first day of the 2020-21 school year falls on a late start Tuesday!  School begins at 8:39am.
2019-20 Yearbooks
ALL students from last year get a yearbook.  If you have not picked up one for your student yet, please stop in the school office between 8-3 to do so.  Thank you!
Remind Accounts - Text & Email Alert Sign Up
Valley Lutheran makes use of Remind, a text and email messaging system, to share information regarding school-wide emergencies and school closings due to inclement weather. Because Remind has restructured their account management, Valley Lutheran has deleted all previous lists and each student and family needs to re-enroll. We ask that individual parents and students sign up for one parent and one student list only, as each list will receive the same notifications and lists are limited to 150 members. Remind is used only in the event that we would contact the entire student body with the same message. Families are limited to a maximum of two (2) parent accounts, and families with students in multiple grades should only sign up for one grade's list.  Please help us be good stewards of our available memberships on each list.

To sign up for email alerts, go to rmd.at/your code and follow the instructions.

To sign up, send a text message to the number 81010, with the bolded text for your list:

Back to School Materials
You can find the updated "Material List" of items required/recommended for specific classes here.  In addition, your student should also have the following:
  • Mask, water bottle, and hand sanitizer -  Please make sure these items are clearly labeled with student names.
  • BYOD - As introduced in the previous Parent Newsletter, students are required to bring their own laptop or Chromebook for use in the classroom and during academic seminars.  Please have those devices in school by September 15. On that day, we will approve each device and admit it to the second tier of our wi-fi system which will give the device preferred access to the internet. Approved devices will be given a VLHS sticker that will be placed on the device so that it can be seen when the device is being used. For more detailed information about Bring Your Own Device click here.  A sign-up sheet for purchasing used Chromebooks from Valley Lutheran will be sent out in an email on Saturday, August 22.
  • Ear buds - Each student should keep their own personal set for use with their own device.
  • ESV Study Bible - This version of the Bible is used in all religion classes all four years.  If you are interested in ordering one please contact the school office at 790-1676.
Parent/Student Virtual Meetings
Parents of Sophomore, Juniors, and Seniors, if you happened to miss those virtual meetings that took place Monday and Tuesday nights, an email with the links to those recorded videos will be sent out soon.

Freshman parents, please join this Google Hangouts link on Friday, August 21, at 7pm. You and your student may join using any device that can access the internet, but it would help with the numbers of participants to have just one device used per household.  If you have a microphone on your device, please make sure it is muted as you enter the meeting.  There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation of information.  Contact the school office or Dr. Lisa Meyers ([email protected]) with any questions.  Thank you!
Valley Lutheran Apparel Sale
Looking for new VL apparel?  The Boosters Club has you covered!  The fall apparel sale is open now and will run through September 7.  Items will be in your hands before the end of September.  Shop online here. Thanks for your support!
Hot Lunch Price for 2020-21
Hot lunch prices for 2020-21 are the same as last year: $35 for a 10-punch card or individual lunches for $3.75. Cards may be purchased in the office before school. Applications for free and reduced lunches are available here.
Summer Read Reminder
Students are to read one of the following books available for their grade before the 2020-2021 school year begins:
  • Freshmen (Class of 2024)Shift by Jennifer Bradbury or Guts by Gary Paulson   *For students taking the course Transitional Reading (or others by permission), choose one of the following: Monster by Walter Dean Myers or The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba
  • Sophomores (Class of 2023)The Book Thief by Markus Zusak or The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
  • Juniors (Class of 2022)Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Patillo Beals or The Help by Kathryn Stockett
  • Seniors (Class of 2021)All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr or Friday Night Lights by H. G. Bissinger
There will be no project for the book. In place of the written project, students will take a comprehension test on their book at the end of August. That grade will still be a part of their English grade for 1st quarter. For students who do not have a VLHS English course during the fall, the grade will be incorporated into another class.Be prepared to either present on your book or discuss it. This may happen in family groups, English classes, or in other classes.

If you have any questions about the summer read, contact Lisa Meyers at [email protected]

"Back to School" Prayer Walk
"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people."  Ephesians 6:18

Parents, Grandparents, Faculty, and Staff are invited to come to VLHS on Monday, August 24th at 7pm to cover our school in prayer. Please meet at the main entrance. Participants will be outside for the duration of the prayer walk. Please also bring a mask. This meaningful and important event will not last longer than an hour. Hope to see you then!
21st Annual Golf Outing
FORE!!  Look out! You may not have seen this coming, but the 21st Annual VLHS Golf Outing is still a go!

We've all been going through a rough couple of months with the global pandemic. So what better way to get out of the house, stretch your legs, and enjoy the late summer weather than to play some golf, have some fun, and support a great school in the process?

Cost per golfer is $70, which includes 18 holes of golf with cart and a lite lunch at the turn.

We realize it may look and feel different than in the past, due to the group gathering restrictions (no post-round banquet). But, we are committed to holding this important event which generates valuable scholarship funds for VL students. And, we will work diligently to ensure a safe environment for all participants.

We still intend to pass out any course-game prizes after the outing.

If you are unable to join us but would like to sponsor/donate for the raffle (such as baskets, gift certificates, etc.), please contact Heidi Behnke at 989.790.1676.

Looking FOREward to TEEing with you on September 19th!

Stay safe and God Bless,

Jeff Roscoe

Plumbing and Woodworking Help Needed
Plumbing: If you, or someone you know, has plumbing skills and the time to "contribute" to our construction project, we have a need. Cabinets have been moved from the "old" science labs and consequently there are some pipes that need to be closed off. Contact John Brandt ([email protected]) if you would like to learn more.

Woodworking:  We need some help converting a science cabinet into a chemical storage cabinet. Contact John Brandt (
j[email protected]
) if you or someone you know would like to contribute woodworking skills to this project.
Thank You
From Dr. Brandt...It's Been a Pleasure
My ministry at Valley Lutheran High School concluded on Friday, July 31.  God blessed me for 41 years with the chance to work with wonderful people.  I will continue to lead the school construction project to completion and will respond to email on that topic.  You should contact Valley Lutheran High School Executive Director Julian Petzold ([email protected]) regarding other matters.
From the Faculty and Staff
Thanks to all who graciously contributed to the Teacher Appreciation gifts in the spring.  We enjoyed a delicious Jimmy John's meal and picked up a beautiful flower in a unique drive-thru format.  The remaining funds were used to replace 2 dorm-sized refrigerators with a spacious, full-sized stainless steel one in the teachers' lounge.  Thank you!
