Thank you to our 2022 Annual Meeting Sponsors

From the President

Greetings to the wonderful community that is the Family Medicine Education Consortium. I am so excited to share the next two years with you as president of this dynamic organization!

We just completed one of our most successful Annual Meetings, just outside of Washington, DC. The preconference workshops focused on two key areas: Preparing to Meet the New ACGME Requirements and Social Determinants of Health as the New Vital Sign. Each year we continue to expand the horizons of what we do in family medicine through the Innovator’s Network and learn together through our successful collaboratives, such as Project IMPLICIT. Our amazing speakers this year focused on what we need to do as family physicians to not only harness but unleash our collective superpowers! We had our largest ever residency fair with nearly 90 residency programs in attendance. The energy generated by the exchanging of ideas from medical students, residents and faculty should fill each of our cups as we turn our attention to residency recruitment.

With each passing year, this FMEC meeting restores my excitement about our discipline because we have so many students looking to become the family medicine physicians of today and tomorrow.

FMEC announces new initiatives

On Saturday, September 17, FMEC President Dr. Leon McCrea announced that the FMEC would be kicking off two new learning collaboratives in late 2022 and 2023, to help residency programs learn from experts and each other (and meet ACGME requirements!).

  • Integrative Health: Thanks to the generous support of the Samueli Foundation, the FMEC will initiate a new Integrative Health Learning Collaborative and make integrative health education available to all FMEC through new virtual programs.

The FMEC is seeking both family physicians and others to serve on the project advisory committees for these efforts, sharing their expertise to help shape them, as well as those who would like their training program to participate in the collaborative and learn. To join these projects as an advisory committee member or participant, contact Scott Allen at [email protected]

Clean up safely after disasters

Hurricane Ian was devastating to communities in Cuba, southeast Florida and elsewhere. The FMEC expresses our condolences and thanks the many first responders, health professionals and others who are working to save lives and clean up.

Disasters can happen anywhere, and community leaders like family physicians should be familiar with tools such as the CDC’s Clean Up Safely After a Disaster resources.

Opportunities for You

NEW WEBINAR: Navigate Student Loans:

Help for Health Systems and Their Physicians

The FMEC and its partner, Navigate Student Loans, are pleased to offer this short webinar to help health system leaders understand the incredible value of the loan help provided by Navigate. Seventy-five percent of physicians graduate with student loans; among physicians of color, the debt burden is even higher. These loans are oppressive and frustrating. Through our joint efforts, the physicians Navigate has reached are on track to save $24,206,635 on loans. This service can save employers a bundle, because it costs far less than partial loan repayments. And physicians may save more with loan planning than cash incentives. Join this 20-minute webinar on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at 12:30pm Eastern to hear how loan repayment help can help with recruiting and retention, diversity and equity, and staff wellness. Register here and encourage your health systems leadership and recruiters to join as well.

Authors needed for AAFP publications

FP Essentials, AAFP’s monthly subscription monograph program, is seeking authors to write upcoming monographs. Monographs are peer reviewed, indexed in Medline/PubMed, and authors (or author teams) receive $4,000 for writing a monograph and seeing it through to publication. Authors are sought for monographs on Cardiovascular Disease, Dementia, Problems with Medium-Sized Joints, and Technology in Medicine. Proposals to write any of these upcoming monographs are due by November 15. See FP Essentials Call for Authors for more information or contact Dr. Barry Weiss at [email protected].

The AAFP is also seeking authors for American Family Physician. Manuscripts typically run 1,500—1,800 words with no more than 3 authors. Preference will be given to authors who have previously published in a peer-reviewed journal, provided high-quality reviews for AFP, who have experience with an evidence-based approach to writing, and who have clinical experience on the topic being discussed. Less experienced authors must have an experienced coauthor who will serve both as lead (first and corresponding) and mentor author. A list of topics being sought is available. More information for authors is available at www.aafp.org/journals/afp/authors.html or contact [email protected].
