Even if it feels like the world has come to a standstill, that doesn't mean you should.

We've always believed in the power of movement and a healthy lifestyle. Now that many of us find ourselves isolated at home, cut off from each other and more sedentary than usual, movement has become more important than ever.

Getting to know our Local Sport Organizations

Kamloops BMX

We are Greater Kamloops BMX club. A not for profit organization who run the Kamloops BMX club under the USAbmx/bmxCanada sanction.

Can you tell us a little about your club and what your club does?

We maintain the Kamloops BMX track located at 1550 Ord Road for public use and for sanctioned events. We also host practices, races and larger events such as Provincial and National Races.

How long has your club been active and operating?

BMX has been a sport in Kamloops since the early 1980's. In '83 the MacArthur BMX club was formed and the track was built on Mac Island. It remained there until 2013 when it was moved to its current location. The name was subsequently changed to the Greater Kamoops BMX club. Prior to 1983 various tracks were made around the city with one being in the current fortune shopping center location.

Where does your club do the majority of training?

#200-1550 Ord Road behind the BCtransit garage.

What is the difference between BMX and other biking disciplines?

BMX is a sport of very minimalistic bikes. As opposed to many other biking sports, our bikes are small, light and only have a rear brake. We have no suspension. Our races are sprints consisting of up to 8 riders racing 1200'. The first rider to cross the line wins.
The skills developed in BMX racing help with bike control and can benefit many other biking disciplines. Our track has obstacles but generally we try to not jump as it can slow a rider down so technique is huge to absorb the obstacles and maintain/generate momentum, sometimes without pedaling (pumping).

Describe your club members in one word.

"FAMILY". Our sport is amazing in that no matter how competitive a member is on the track they are always willing to help and nurture other riders off the track. Each race is finished with a fist pump and a good race.

What are your proudest club accomplishments or achievements that you'd like to highlight?

This season we were fortunate enough to receive funding from the Kamloops Sports Legacy Fund to pave the track corners. This improvement will allow for faster and safer cornering while reducing maintenance greatly. We have had amazing reviews from riders all over the province who have come to try them. Of the 21 tracks in BC we are only the 6th to have paved corners.

What has your club been working on lately?

This year has presented some unique challenges. Now that the job of paving the corners is complete we have devoted a lot of time to getting riders back on the track safely amid the pandemic. We have begun practicing for local members and are working toward the possibility of races this season.

What is an inspiring moment that you've witnessed from one of your club members?

Bike sharing. We had a race one day where we had a member who wanted to race and they did not have a bike to ride. When a rider finished a race they ran their bike back up the gate for the other rider to use their bike.

There are always riders willing to Lima bikes for riders to try a new size, new brand, crank length. Even if the rider is it will be your competition it is a group of individuals who always help and encourage one and another.

What do you think makes Kamloops a great sporting community?

Kamloops provides many facilities and venues in all 4 seasons for people to be engaged in sports. There is something for everyone and every interest from participants to volunteers to spectators - Kamloops is an incredible city to be part of.

Tell us something that not everyone would know about your club?

Kamloops BMX is a sport that people of any age, gender and skill level can enjoy together, we have entire families participating in race nights. The track is not in the most visible location to visitors so can get overlooked. The facility is open to the public during non-sanctioned event times and is a great way to introduce yourself to the sport before coming out to an actual practice or race.

How do people connect with the club to learn more and get involved?

The best way to see what our club is up to is to like us on Facebook.  The site is updated weekly and is the best way to reach out to learn more about the sport and how to be involved.

Are there any general comments that you'd like to share?

Due to pandemic we have moved from our normal schedule to a modified practice every Thursday night.  New rides are always welcome to join.

Sincerely,

Kamloops Sports Council
