REP Parent-Led Program
| |
|
Dear REP Parents,
Bill and I have met with the textbook reps and now know how the upcoming year will look, as we begin. First, I want to assure you that you will have all the support you need as you embark on this new adventure of teaching and learning our beautiful Catholic faith as a family. I want to reiterate that I have great faith in you and remind you that you only need to keep one step ahead of the kids. You don't have to know all Catholic teaching today, only what you will teach tomorrow! That's how I did it when I first had the responsibility to teach classrooms full of students in fifth through eighth grade.
Grades 1-5
With our new at home approach, the students in gr. 1-5 will use the brand-new edition of the Sadlier book, "Christ in Us". Each grade level is arranged in the same order, with 5 units which follow the outline of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. They are, Creed (What we believe), Sacraments and Liturgy (How we worship), Morality (How we live our lives in Christ) and Prayer. The fifth unit deals with the Church year and seasons. Each of the first 4 units has 5 lessons, and the Church Year unit has 8 lessons.
In organizing the year, it was decided that the lessons that talked about the Church year would be inserted into the other units when each season occurs (for example, to study Christmas in December). Rather than have firm dates when each lesson is to be taught, we are giving you the flexibility of a wide time frame in which to complete each unit of study.
This is the plan for grades 1-5:

Since students (parents) have the flexibility of pacing, the timeframe for turning in assignments is also flexible (see above chart). All due dates and assignments will be clearly found on the parent pages of the Christ in Us website. A presentation of how to access and use the website for you and your children is being planned for September, after you receive student books. Please use the time prior to the parent intro to familiarize yourself with your child's book. You will be given all the tools you need to make use of the supports, activities and lesson plans designed for parent-teachers. We are working on the process for Grade 1-5 students to submit assignment electronically and will have that information in our presentation in September.
Grades 6-8
Grades 6-8 will turn in assignment pages from their textbooks. They may be turned in either by dropping in the collection basket at any Mass; dropping in the mail slot at the Parish Ministry Center, or dropping off in the Parish or School Office during normal business hours.
All pages must have the student's name and grade. On the envelope, please write "REP Assignment", with student's name and grade clearly listed. Assignments will be graded and returned to students.
If you have a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader, they will use the Loyola textbook series "Christ Our Life". Each grade level has their own timeline and assignment schedule. Each student in Gr. 6 will also receive a Bible.
GRADE 6: God Calls a People (The Old Testament)

We are also exploring a parent-led program for use with Preschool and Kindergarten students which follows the Sunday readings.
Book Pick-up is currently set for the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 9: what would have been our first day of REP. But things can change. In order to avoid a lot of congestion, I hope to have a staggered pick-up schedule ready for our next newsletter.
I know this is a lot to take in, but I hope that after you have the books in hand, and take part in the training for parent materials and student activities, you'll be pleased with the variety of options in the program, and its ease of use.
Meanwhile if you have any questions or concerns, you can email or call me. I am happy to talk with you about this plan.
