PROGRESSIVE 1 AND 2

PROGRESSIVE 1

It was a perfect week. We have spent much time on the serve. The kids were able "to feel" the motion, and this week, they were serving better. The kids who have caught the movement from the last stage (the racquet up and in front of the kid) and the kids who could cope with the toss could move further, and they have started to serve from the "trophy" position.
We don't want to rush, the kids need to have the fundamental skills, and that's why each practice, we will spend time for the serve. Also, the little players were practicing the forehand and the backhand in the motion. They moved from side to side with a correct movement, "shuffle steps," and before each hit, the kids prepared the forehand or the backhand swing in a sideways position. The coaches could see a good result from the previous practices!

PROGRESSIVE 2

The kids worked on the serve this week. They were playing on the score and the point they have started from the serve. The kids have learned the simple rules, and they could play the game with each other. They were encouraged by the process. We are going to introduce the game on the score on each practice.

PROGRESSIVE 2 - Competitive
From Head Coach Mike Donski
mikedonski@acetennis.ca

The prog 2 competitive group had a great week of training this week. They worked on playing out of the middle and taking advantage of the point with angled shots to put the opponent in trouble, following up with a finishing volley. The success rate was higher than last week. Coach Tom and I are really happy with the focus and effort from all players. We've done lots of serves, always keeping with the theme of consistency, which has improved a lot since the beginning of the month. The kids are ready for this week's tournament!
PROGRESSIVE 3
From Head Coach Mihai Mocanu
mihai@acetennis.ca

This week we introduced foreand and backhand volleys and we also worked on overheads. We continued with what we did last week and created playing situation where players were also forced to use volleys and overheads.

COMPETITIVE ACES
From Head Tom Pociecha
tom@acetennis.ca

Since there have been quite a few students participating in the inter-club tournaments we played singles matches this week in which we emphasized the following tactical strategies; outlasting the opponent with consistency, recognizing opportunity " balls (i.e. short balls) and moving forward to finish the point at the net and using the forehand when receiving balls in the middle of the court (when at the baseline) to make the opponent move.
The "drilling" portion of the practice was done in a co-operative manner in which the players had a chance to go through a tournament style warm up. The largest challenge was a co-operative rally with one player at the net and the other player at the baseline. This was especially evident when one of the players had to hit overhead shots while the other player tried to send cooperative lobs. We will continue working on these skills going forward.
HIGH SCHOOL TEAM
From Head Coach Jay Barlow
jay@acetennis.ca

The group continues to improve on their ability to rally from the baseline and cover the court with better movement and recovery. There is still some reluctance to move forward and play at the net, but this has improved a lot this week. The players are engaging in more competitive point play and getting more comfortable in match situations. Good job to those who played in the inter club tournament and gained some experience competing with other players from around the club.
