LASC And LACCD Virtually Celebrate Its Resilient 2020 Graduates
Congrats to Los Angeles Southwest College's Class of 2020! The Virtual Recognition Ceremony on June 9 saw hundreds of students recognized for graduating or being candidates for graduation as well as addresses from former Vice President Joe Biden, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and  U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters . The students dedication to their studies has been truly admirable. Take some time to watch a  video of the ceremony .
LASC President Drops Off Pizzas And Gifts To Graduates
Prior to the June 9 Virtual Recognition Ceremony, LASC's President Dr. Seher Awan dropped off pizzas and gifts to some of the college's well-deserving Class of 2020 graduates at their homes to thank them for their dedication to their studies and to LASC. She was joined by Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator Johnel Barron as well as Counselor and Associated Students Organization advisor Juan Camacho.
LASC Employees Share Words Of Encouragement And Recognition With Graduates
While members of the LASC Cougars community were not able to come together to celebrate a traditional commencement in 2020, faculty members, classified professionals, and administrators wanted to make sure their messages of encouragement and congratulations were shared with the Class of 2020. LASC Theater Program Recognized With National Honors
LASC's  Theatre Program   was recently honored nationally by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for their production of "Criminal," an incredibly powerful and moving piece. "Criminal" was recognized with the following accolades: The Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Award, Outstanding Production Ensemble, and Outstanding Company-Generated Work.
All Spring Nursing Students Complete State Requirements
Despite COVID-19 and the hardships that it brought, all LASC nursing students completed their California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) required 135 clinical hours this past Spring Semester. Congratulations to all of them for this incredible work. LASC's future nurses will be ready to support our communities when they officially enter the nursing field.⁣
Dual Enrollment Coordinator James Mackey organized a demonstration march in the Crenshaw District on June 20, a day before Father's Day, called "Fathers & Children March for Unity, Equality and Justice" to support Black Lives Matter and promote the role that fathers play in shaping the next generation.
LASC And LACCD Celebrate Supreme Court Decision On DACA
The U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program by ruling that the Trump Administration cannot dismantle the immigration reform program strongly supported by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). 
Long-time LASC Professor Fernando  Pullum recently was featured on CBS-2 and KCAL-9 detailing his life and his work with young people at the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center in Leimert Park.
LASC I nstructor Shares Work Being Done By Long Beach Mentor Program
ABC-7 recently profiled 100 Black Men of Long Beach of which LASC's Political Science Instructor Dr. Lance Robert is the chapter president. During the report, Robert shares the impactful role the organization has in improving the quality of life within local communities through education, health and wellness, economic opportunities, and the provision of leadership and mentoring.
LASC Celebrates Pride Month And Is Committed To LGBTQ+ Community
As June's Pride Month 2020 winds down, LASC continues to be committed to increasing LGBTQ+ visibility on campus and providing students with a safe space to not only be who they are but to be proud and thrive. 
LASC Foundation Event Headlined By Yvonne Orji Inspires Students
Thank you to the incredible Yvonne Orji, star on HBO's 'Insecure,' for headling a free, virtual networking event on June 27 put on by the  LASC's Foundation. More than 300 people registered, including scores of LASC students, and $5,000 was raised. Thanks to Yvonne, host Jasmine Simpkins, presenter Karim Webb and all of the business and community leaders who participated and shared their stories of overcoming difficult situations.
LASC Offering Remote Instruction And Business Operations
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, LASC is physically closed to the public, but  classes are being offered in a remote learning (online) model using Canvas and all student services and business operations will be available remotely. LASC's Career For A Cause To Provide Training For Social Services Careers
Careers for a Cause is an eight-week online, pre-employment training program offered by LASC to prepare South L.A. residents to compete for careers in social services. Participants will receive a stipend and case management to support their participation in the training. Register today for the upcoming virtual information sessions at 9 a.m. and at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9.

Assistance for all students is just a click away via the online Cranium Cafe, a meeting and collaboration platform designed specifically for student support.
LASC Hosts COVID-19 Testing In Conjunction With The Kroger Company
 LASC was proud to be the first location as part of The Kroger Company's national COVID-19 testing program. Thanks to The Kroger Company for providing the testing on LASC's campus on June 18-19 and 25-26 to more than 800 people, including LASC employees and students as well as community members. Ralphs' pharmacy team members conducted the tests in Parking Lot 3.

Registration has started for LASC's Summer Session II, which is from July 20 to August 23. Classes will be conducted in a remote learning (online) environment throughout the summer.
TRiO Scholars Celebrates Graduates Who Are Fighting For Their Future
Trio Scholars , a federally funded program designed to assist program participants in achieving their educational goals, has released its  Graduation/Transfer Celebration newsletter  highlighting its graduates. The graduates are fighters who have overcame extreme adversity and will continue to fight for their future. The TRiO Scholars office is extremely proud of the students and encourage them to be tenacious and continue to accomplish their dreams.

LASC Classes To Be Offered Online Through Fall Semester
LACCD Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez has announced that given the present health and safety restrictions due to the COVID-19 outbreak all Summer Session classes and all Fall Semester classes will be offered in remote learning and online environments. 
LASC Is Available To Support Health And Mental Health Of All Students
All of the providers and staff at LASC's  Student Health Center , which is operated by Mosaic Family Care, are committed to supporting the health and mental health needs of all students. The on-campus center is closed, but students can still receive support from the Mosaic Family Care office.

State Update: State Chancellor Demands Action Against Structural Racism
The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office hosted a Call to Action webinar in June during which Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley and other system leaders called for the system to actively strategize and take action against structural racism. Chancellor Oakley called for six key areas to be addressed.

Disenfranchised Communities
Until economic opportunities are afforded to Black and disenfranchised communities, there is no justice, writes LACCD Board of Trustees President Andra Hoffman and Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez, who added the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others can no longer be ignored.
LACCD Update: L ow-Cost Internet Options Are Available
As the majority of courses are taught remotely in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, Internet access will be required for participation in many class activities. Several organizations are providing low-cost Internet access to students.
LACCD Update: District Partners With LAHSA To Address Student Housing
The Los Angeles Community College District and LASC is now working with the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority (LAHSA) to help students with housing issues.  The Campus Peer Navigator Program aims to connect students who are experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness with resources that can end their housing crisis. 
Legislative Update: Community Colleges Win Suit For Federal Emergency Financial Relief
A federal judge ruled in June that the U.S. Department of Education could not place eligibility restrictions on California community college students to receive emergency coronavirus financial aid. Those restrictions had prevented undocumented students and students in the DACA program from receiving the aid in the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act. 

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, upcoming events at LASC's campus have had to be cancelled or rescheduled. Here are some important dates coming up:
  • July 1: Fall Semester open enrollment, including K-12 students and special admits
  • July 3: Independence Day Observed (No classes)
  • July 19: Summer Session I ends
  • July 20: Summer Session II begins
  • July 20: Deadline to add a Summer Session II class
  • July 20: Summer Session II petition for course pass/no pass
  • July 31: Summer 2020 Graduation petition filing period ends
  • July 31: Deadline to appeal loss of California Promise Grant (Formerly BOG) for Fall Semester 2020
