FATHERHOOD MUSINGS AND PROCESS THEOLOGY
(A Process Science of Mind Approach)
By Rev. Dr. Arthur Chang

It is wonderful to see the sharing of fathers’ photos many folks on Facebook are showing as they celebrate Father’s Day. The photos suggest the strong bonds of relationship between father and offspring. Process relational theology views this universe as relational. The Hebrew and Christian Bibles are full of instances of the relational world in which we live.
God’s activities and expectations are relational. First, God creates the world from chaos (not nothing) by relating to it creatively. God creates humans and urges them to participate creatively and relationally. The “give and take” of God is evident in how God informs and expects humans to respond, in His relationship with them.
Jesus, in the Christian Bible, exemplifies the relational world even more personally causing him to address God as Abba, Father. Abba inspires Jesus to see the relational world as love, as did Moses. God is rendered as specially incarnated in Jesus. This relational flow of life and intelligence dance and sing through all Nature and throughout the universe.
Process theology sees God as affecting the world and being affected by the world. When we miss the mark, which the Bible calls “sin”, God, as the Good Father, is affected. The Hebrew Bible portrays God as angry at times, as any meaningful relationship of father and offspring may display. This is not the impassible, detached God-view associated with the popular conception of spirituality.
For both Alfred North Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne, the fathers of Process Philosopher and Theology respectively, it is an essential attribute of God to affect and be affected by temporal processes, contrary to the forms of theism that hold God to be in all respects non-temporal (eternal), unchanging (immutable), and unaffected by the world (impassible). Process theology does not deny that God is in some respects eternal (will never die), immutable (in the sense that God is unchangingly good), and impassible (in the sense that God’s eternal aspect is unaffected by actuality), but it contradicts the classical view by insisting that God is in some respects temporal, mutable, and passible.
Once we realize that God created a relational world it is not too much to see that science, philosophy, and culture reveal the relatedness of the universe. Relationality is at the heart of the quantum science world. Relationality coaxes us to leave our dogmas as God coaxes Abram to leave his father’s house and go to a land that God would show him. Abram, in accepting the charge, became Abraham, reflected a change in nature in the way that we leave our father’s house to become self-responsible, mature interrelated individuals. Process thinkers believe those who are willing to open their minds to the interrelatedness of our cosmos will go on to explore the outer reaches of our relational world.
Process theologian Thomas Jay Oord says the following:
What makes relational theology distinct is its general approach to thinking about God’s interaction with creation. At its core, relational theology affirms two key ideas:
1.    God affects creatures in various ways. Instead of being aloof and detached, God is active and involved in relationship with others. God relates to us, and that makes an essential difference.
2.    Creatures affect God in various ways. While God’s nature is unchanging, creatures influence the loving and living Creator of the universe. We relate to God, and creation makes a difference to God.
While God’s good nature is unchanging, from a Process theological perspective, God feels us, is responsive to us and cares about us individually. However, God does not act to change the freedom we are given. Instead, from a process relational vantage point, God responds to us by providing us with options, from which we must choose our way forward.
As God the Father is love, God expects us to love one another. We are to love even our enemies. We are to respond to each other ethically, which means we must include justice with love or relations will self-destruct.
Father honoring is appropriate when a father appropriately loves and nurtures his children. However, without making our earth-fathers into gods, we should see their status as pointing us toward the mystical, loving Father of the universe. It is this inflection that must be included in Father’s Day if we are to let our contemplation of our earthly father expand into the “Our Father” of Jesus’ cosmic realization. This will bring about the magnification of the marvelous relational universe in which we live and make it clear that we are all sisters and brothers in this interdependent world.
Happy Father’s Day to my father and all fathers on this day of relational commemoration!

Wednesday June Theme: Thoughts Are Things

6-23-2021 Using the Wisdom of Experience

The popular emphasis on the present may lead us to devalue the importance of the past in our live. This is in spite of the fact that the present moment comes into being and perishes immediately becoming the past. Learning to use the past as our resource to wisdom will give us the wisdom to enjoy the present and to pursue the future meaningfully.

Ernest's Corner

Whatever is true of the Universe as a Whole must also be true of the individual as some part of this Whole. Man is evolved from the Universe as a self-conscious, thinking center of Living Spirit, and as such he must, in his nature and being, reproduce the Universe.
If we realize that God is “Triune” and that man is a spiritual likeness of God we shall see that the whole scheme of Life, and the whole nature of the Divine Being, is re-enacted through man. This, of course, does not mean that man is God. It means that in his small world of individual expression, his nature is identical with God’s.
This is what Jesus meant when he said, “As the Father hath life within Himself, so hath He given to the Son to have life within himself.” This refers to inherent Life, real Life. That is the only life God could have. We must expect to find in man, therefore, the same inherent attributes that we

Ask for help

Sometimes it’s just not feasible to navigate the tricky anxiety, depression, isolation and trauma by yourself. For those who have underlying mental health conditions, for those who have experienced past traumas, for people on the frontlines in medicine, and for people who are lonely, this moment can be especially tough. But there are a number of free, confidential resources to turn to for help. Here are a few:
—Steinberg Institute website, links to mental health resources and care throughout California, https://steinberginstitute.org/links-research-care/
—Institute on Aging’s 24/7 Friendship Line (especially for people who have disabilities or are over 60), 1-800-971-0016 or call 415-750-4138 to volunteer. https://www.ioaging.org/services/all-inclusive-health-care/friendship-line
