Los Angeles Unified and Step Up Tutoring
Combine to Provide Free Online Tutoring to Students

LOS ANGELES – August 10, 2020 – Los Angeles Unified today revealed part of its plan to provide one-on-one tutoring, both in person and online for students who need it most. The district announced it will be working with Step Up Tutoring, which will provide online tutoring services to students for free. Classroom teachers and principals will help identify students for this program.
An initial pilot effort with Step Up serving 500 students in three Communities of Schools (Huntington Park, Fremont and Taft) will begin shortly after the start of the school year, and the program will be expanded to more students during the semester.

“We've learned a good deal about online education since March and it's clear there is a need for more one-on-one support for students,” Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner said. “The individual attention a teacher can provide to a student in a classroom at school is not easily replicated in a Zoom class with 20 or 30 students.” READ MORE

GROUP EVENTS + GATHERINGS PROHIBITED

The LA County Public Health Officer has issued an order to Prohibit Group Events and Gatherings, Require Social Distancing Measures, and the Closure of Certain Businesses. The order states, “….the Los Angeles County Health Officer issued an order to prohibit all indoor and outdoor, public and private events and gatherings within a confined space, where 50 or more members of the public are expected to attend at the same time, to require physical distancing measures and temporary closure of certain businesses. “
Also, if Los Angeles Police Department officers respond to and verify that a large party is occurring at a property, and there’s evidence that the venue has repeatedly engaged in such behavior, the department will request that the city shut off water and power services within 48 hours.

What Do Face Coverings Do?
Before we talk about the power of a face covering, we should start by mentioning what we've learned about COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. We know that COVID-19 mainly spreads from person to person through respiratory droplets (produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, sings, or raises their voice). These droplets can land in the eyes, mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

We've also learned that MANY people who are infected with COVID-19 are asymptomatic (have no symptoms). We can’t tell, by just looking at them, whether they’re infected or not.

Initiative connects Angelenos impacted by COVID-19 to economic relief

LOS ANGELES — On August 12th, Mayor Eric Garcetti launched L.A. Connected, an effort to help Angelenos hardest-hit by COVID-19 access vital financial relief. The City’s effort will connect struggling families with critical sources of economic security in the face of the ongoing pandemic, including Economic Impact Payments, unemployment insurance, income tax credits, and banking resources.

“COVID-19 has dealt a devastating blow to Angelenos’ economic security, and L.A. Connected will be the bridge between tens of thousands of households and their ability to make rent, pay the bills, put food on the table, and stay afloat,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Our job as a City is to save lives and safeguard livelihoods — and today’s effort will help us build a sturdy foundation of justice, equity, and stability for our neighbors struggling to get by.”

L.A. Connected aims to educate Angelenos about the financial aid available to them from the state and federal governments — and empower them to access it. A network of service providers through the City’s WorkSource and FamilySource Centers will help residents apply for unemployment insurance, file their taxes, apply for as much as $8,000 in tax credits, and access federal stimulus checks, known as Economic Impact Payments, which total up to $1,200 per adult and $500 per child.
