Digital Twin for Cyber-physical Production Systems
- 13 September 14.00-15.15 CEST

Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) are one of the pillars for the new industrial revolution, which is marked by the decentralization of production processes as well as the proliferation of interconnected intelligent devices throughout the production and logistics chain. Embedded computers and networks monitor and control the physical processes with feedback loops in which physical processes affect computations and vice versa. An industrial automation system is an example of CPS where computational elements control and automate the execution of physical processes in industrial plants. Thus, it is clear the need to connect physical objects to information associated with these objects in the cyber world. In CPS, for each product, machine or equipment, a virtual (logical) representation needs to be developed with its actual physical description. This process is known as virtualization and its product, the digital twin, is one of the consequences of Industry 4.0.

IFIP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct: A Document for its Time
- 4 October 15:00-16.15 CEST

In this session, some of the creators of the IFIP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct will gather to talk about the Code’s importance. In today’s rapidly transforming digital landscape, it is vital to set explicit boundaries and outline clear values. To quote from the Code’s preamble: “The entire computing profession benefits when the ethical decision-making process is accountable to and transparent to all stakeholders. Open discussions about ethical issues promote this accountability and transparency.

CIO Strategy Council launches Sustainable IT Pledge
Internet and IT technology usage already creates more greenhouse gas than the aviation industry according to a 2019 report by The Shift Project, a Paris, France-based carbon transition think tank, and is on track to account for eight per cent of emissions by 2025.

For the first time in North America, a group of Canada’s biggest public and private sector organizations including Accenture, ATCO, Bell, Canadian Blood Services, Micro Focus, Microsoft Canada and Oracle, have made a commitment to curb the environmental impact of their IT operations by signing the Sustainable IT Pledge.

The pledge signatories are all members of the CIO Strategy Council, a non-profit that brings together Canada’s leading businesses and public-sector organizations to act on the challenges posed by the digital economy. It is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada and develops standards that support the data-driven economy.

The software developer is changing
– and so is their workflow
via Appian, a CIPS Corporate Partner

What does a software developer do? That’s easy: they develop apps and software, right? It’s no longer that simple. Whereas before developers were reserved to handle writing software - a specialist skill - now they are expected to collaborate more with the business. And that requires communicating and better understanding various aspects of the business in which they operate.

The business / IT landscape is changing. Developers now need to communicate projects in a clear and easily digestible way, and they need to collaborate with people far beyond the boundaries of the IT function. Fortunately, there are tools that facilitate that collaboration, and they’re changing the face of coding forever.

The appetite for change

But why is this change happening? Firstly, there is widespread disillusionment among companies who have invested heavily into custom software that either takes too long to come to fruition or takes too long to deliver value. I know of companies that spent hundreds of millions of dollars on projects that took years to build, only to be underwhelmed when they were finally completed.

Upholding ACM's Principles
In response to serious violations against ACM's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, the ACM Council voted unanimously to revoke the ACM membership of Tao Li, a professor of computer engineering at the University of Florida, at its meeting on June 11, 2021. The Committee on Professional Ethics (COPE) recommended this action to Council after considering the evidence it received concerning Li's repeated violations of the ACM's Code of Ethics (https://www.acm.org/code-of-ethics). Council's action demonstrates ACM's commitment to advancing computing as a profession and as a service to society. ACM is not alone in this commitment. Indeed, other professional organizations have adopted ACM's Code of Ethics indicating their support of its values and the positive impact its Principles afford the computing community.

Both ACM and IEEE received complaints about Li's actions surrounding two computer architecture conferences: The 2019 IEEE International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) and the 2017 ACM Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems (ASPLOS). A Joint Investigation Committee (JIC) was convened in early 2020 and a team of professional investigators were hired. As a result of the investigation, JIC filed an ACM Code of Ethics violation complaint against Li, submitting as evidence the investigators' final report. COPE reviewed the evidence and determined that Li willfully violated scientific research integrity standards. Quite simply, Li orchestrated an attack on the ethical computing values expressed in the ACM Code of Ethics and most other codes of scientific conduct.

Call for checklists and criteria for
privacy and public protection in IT
By: Donna Lindskog, FCIPS, I.S.P. (ret.)

IT professionals have many specializations: this is a call for you to share what you know about the requirements in your area. Please comment on this blog if you know a good website or reference that you feel all IT professionals should know and follow.

CIPS (Canadian Information Processing Society) says that all IT professionals have a public obligation.

We are the practitioners that should protect the public from the black box of computer mystery since the automation is transparent to us, but not to them. Some of this obligation has become quite specific as the public has begun to learn what surprises they might see from IT. Laws have been passed about privacy. Certifications have been created about security. I am sure there are guidelines somewhere about how to “remove identity” from big data analysis before it is shared. In Germany the government is even directing car manufacturers on the rules for their AI that steers the cars.
