A PRAYER FOR MAY
BY SR. HELEN JEAN NOVY, HM
VICE PRESIDENT OF MISSION EMERITA
Mary, strong woman,
Give me courage
to witness to God’s love
no matter the challenges.

Mary, faithful disciple,
Guide me in following your Son more closely.

Mary, model of humility,
Help me acknowledge in gratitude
all my God-given gifts
and admit in truth my total dependence on God.

Mary, proclaimer of justice,
Lead me to a deeper
and more inclusive love
for those needing to be lifted up.

Mary, singer of joy,
Encourage my spirit
with Jesus' hopeful promises.
Amen!

SCHOOL UPDATES & HIGHLIGHTS
Magnificat Enters Strategic Planning Process
The Magnificat Board of Directors and Leadership Team have engaged Partners in Mission to lead them through a strategic planning process that will guide the direction of the school for the next five years. The strategic planning committee met for the first time last week via Zoom. All members of the Magnificat community will soon receive a survey to contribute to the process by offering feedback from their own unique perspectives as board members, students, alumnae, parents, past parents, faculty/staff, board members, and friends.
Anti-Racism Task Force Update
Magnificat's Anti-Racism Advisory Task Force has been meeting monthly since February to fulfill its charge to advance anti-racism efforts and to make the school community more diverse and welcoming to all students and families in service to our mission “to educate students holistically to learn, lead, and serve in the spirit of Mary’s Magnificat.” The group is comprised of alumnae, parents of current and past students, community members, and school faculty/staff.

The task force is expected to meet for about one year to complete its work, at which time, they will provide recommendations to school leadership on
anti-racism, equity, and inclusion strategies. The six areas that the task force is focusing on are: alumnae experience; parent/guardian engagement; professional development and anti-racism training; racial dialogues; recruitment and retention; and school policies and procedures. The Magnificat Community will receive regular updates throughout the coming year as this important work continues.
AP Literature Book Museum
"Unbreakable Bonds" exhibit of The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan Amelea Sese '21
"Two Worlds Alike" exhibit of The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton
Ellerie Heinzmann '21
"Exposing the Scheme" exhibit of Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
Maura Kelley '21
Over the last several weeks, AP Literature students were hard at work creating interactive exhibits about novels they have studied and critiqued independently throughout the semester. Their task was to convey the novel's importance, central message, or an important issue the novel brings to the surface. The Book Museum is on display in the HM Center and students, faculty, and staff are invited to fill out comment cards about the exhibits they found most compelling.
AP Computer Science Students Explore Bias in Coding
AP Computer Science Principles students recently completed a unit on data which included conversations about artificial intelligence and machine learning. Part of their study was an exploration of bias in machine learning and the fact that, while computers are inherently objective, the people who program them have biases. The discussion brought up the importance of collecting diverse training data in order to avoid bias in the technology we use. The lesson, created by code.org, was a concrete way to incorporate social justice in students' STEM learning.
Junior Artist Selected for Ohio
Governor's Youth Art Exhibition
Congratulations to Paige Erickson '22 for being juried into the 2021 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition for her metalwork titled, “Lost and Found”! Paige's work was one of 258 pieces of art chosen from over 6,000 entries.

The exhibition and awards ceremony can be viewed by visiting govart.org.
"While I was initially inspired by Jack's compass from the Pirates of the Carribean series, I was also inspired to make this piece because I wanted to create something that challenged my metal-working abilities, required creative thinking, and was fun to make. This piece was all of these, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to display my hard work at the Governor's Art Exhibition."
Campus Ministry Retreats Make Space for
Prayer, Reflection, and Building Community
Throughout the year, members of the Class of 2021 attended retreats focused on connecting to their faith through prayer, nature, art, and practicing wellness. These small-group afternoon retreats gave our seniors the opportunity for connection and reflection as they navigated the stress of college applications, AP exams, and finishing their high school careers. Pictured right, students make essential oil roller balls to help with relaxation and concentration.
Throughout the month of April, the sophomore class participated in mini retreats inspired by our theme for the school year - We Belong to Each Other. They cycled through three rotations: We Belong to the Earth, We Belong to Each Other, and We Belong to God. Campus Ministers planned activities focused on building community and caring for God's creation, along with a prayer service where each sophomore received her Serve pendant to add to the Learn pendant she received during her freshman year.
