About the film selections:
The Polish Film Festival Miami, in partnership with the Embassy of Poland in Washington, D.C., invites you on a journey through Poland in “Late Summer Nostalgia.” We will present four films that will introduce you to the less-often tread nooks and crannies of the Polish imagination.
Goodbye, Till Tomorrow (1960) – Director Janusz Morgenstern’s debut film is a summertime love story about Jacek (legendary actor Zbigniew Cybulski) and Margueritte (Teresa Tuszyńska). Despite the sentimental charm of early 60s music, swishing dresses and the naïve discussions shared between the two young lovers, the film is an apt portrayal of a generation of young people in 1960s Gdańsk - people hungry for freedom, social change and a western lifestyle.
In Papusza (2013), you will meet the first published Polish-Roma poetess, Bronisława Wajs (known by her literary name of Papusza), who confronts the image of traditional femininity and expectations imposed on her by her community. This internationally acclaimed black-and-white film was created by a duo of Polish filmmakers and frequent artistic collaborators, Joanna Kos-Krauze and the late Krzysztof Krauze.
We will conclude our sentimental journey in Beskid Niski, a picturesque mountain range located in the Polish-Slovak borderlands, to peek into the lives of the protagonists of Strawberry Wine (2007). Based on Polish writer Andrzej Stasiuk’s acclaimed collection of short stories, Tales of Galicia, and lovingly directed with attention to its literary source by Dariusz Jabłoński, Strawberry Wine is a story about love and belonging that will draw you into a world of provincial communities hailing from different cultures and nations living amongst each other, where life seems slow and ordinary, but where beauty permeates every moment.
Last, but not least, all generations of viewers will certainly enjoy Dir. Marta Karwowska’s Double Trouble (2017), a whimsical story about two 12 year-olds on a hunt for hidden treasure. The film explores both childhood’s exciting journeys and the loneliness caused by the absence of parents. As the kids eventually learn, friendship is best cemented when the going gets tough.
We hope you join us on this cinematic journey through Poland as summer draws to an end.
