60-Year History of BA’s Athletic Program -
Maybe you have heard the comment, “You are not going to believe this unless you had been there.” Well I was there!
I am alluding to the remarkable transformation and maturation of the athletic program throughout the school’s 60-year history. Its growth is a prime example of the school’s relentless pursuit of excellence in all aspects of its curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities.
In the early decades with a small enrollment and limited facilities, BA found a way to provide student athletes with the opportunity to compete in a variety of sports, e.g., football, field hockey, volleyball,
basketball, wrestling, track, and golf. The cost of the athletic program was not included in tuition, so the
support came from player fees and fundraisers, e.g., magazine sales, first aid kits, and a huge rummage sale.
Over the years, the impact of athletics became an important component to achieving the school’s Mission and attracting students who valued a quality education and a competitive athletic program. Support for athletics was manifested by the expanded facilities from one athletic field and one gymnasium to its current impressive campus.
Throughout BA’s 60 years, the athletic program has contributed to the achievement of the school’s Mission of graduating young men and women who are now living their lives as “responsible, constructive, free people.”
You can believe it as I was blessed to have been there!
~ Dr. Robert Solsrud, Former Head of School
