“You have to remember, if you’re not doing things in your life that give you goose bumps, you’re doing it wrong.” - Timi Bauscher
Help someone in the arts while supporting Arts Blast.

Arts Blast is a free, arts-dedicated publication that, not surprisingly, has made the COVID-19 hit list. A reader asked how to help a nd, in true Arts Blast spirit, a plan was hatched.

Each $50 donor gets to suggest an artist, musician, writer, or gallery for a feature story in Arts Blast! Donors may be named or anonymous, your choice. Pay options are check and Paypal.
Aya Fiber Studio
Sponsored by Suzanne Connors

In a typical year, more than 500 students come from all corners of the country to learn about textile art at Aya Fiber Studio, a Port Salerno Fish House Art Center presence since 2015.
Aya Fiber Studio is all about nature and tradition. A course list usually would include natural dyeing, botanical prints, indigo and shibori workshops, advance shibori stitching techniques, and marbling on silk. For Connors, utilizing “traditional ways handed down through generations while adopting sustainable practices” is paramount. Students create one-of-a-kind shibori fabrics hand-dyed with indigo, then turn them into unique wearable art, accessories, and home fashions. All the sewing is done by the student artists. Those classes will return, but for right now, the view is a bit different.
A pandemic might turn plans topsy-turvy for many, but artist entrepreneurs like Connors are calling on their creativity to salvage businesses and improvise! With the gradual loosening of restrictions, Connors has begun opening the doors for Open Studios with guidelines to keep students and staff safe. “I am doing small classes less than 6 students (1 per table) by appointment and holding open studio time with 1 person to a table. Open studio time must be pre-reserved so we don’t end up with too many students. These are not classes. Participants must provide their own supplies and materials. You must have taken an indigo class prior to use the indigo vat.”
Dyes and supplies will be available for purchase. The detailed set of rules is online.
Also online are indigo kits assembled for homebound fiber artists. They include indigo dye, a reducing agent, a pair of gloves, soda ash, and instruction sheets. Kits are packaged in an indigo dyed shibori bag.

Aya Fiber Studio is online and on Facebook.

As calendars are coming to life again, Arts Blast will begin listing events. Basic calendar listings, as always, are free but MUST be submitted in the requested format. You may include one low-res photo with caption and identification for possible use in Arts Blast. Send calendar listings to willi@willimiller.com one week before publication. An eblast graphic page (Constant Contact, etc.) is not acceptable for the Arts Blast calendar. To advertise an event, email for current rates.

Contact for public (for tickets, questions, etc.)
Then add a short, descriptive release if available.

Opening Softly and Quietly

Announcements of openings beginning June 1 are trickling in. Rather than trying to keep an updated list hour by hour, Arts Blast suggests that readers continue to check websites and Facebook and Instagram pages for your favorite places' plans.

Most seem to have caveats and conditions for visitors to adhere to. This is a time when we all have to make our own decisions about how we choose to go forward with the loosening government restrictions.

Personally, I have a mask in my bag, on the front seat of my car, and in a pocket any time I have to go out. Yes, I give squinty dirty looks at mask-less people and have startled a few of them by holding out my hand and firmly saying Stop! if they headed in my direction. Good thing I was wearing a mask so they couldn't identify me. 😇

I came out negative in a COVID test this week and will do everything I can to keep it that way. I hope Arts Blast readers also will do what's necessary to stay healthy.
TONIGHT!

But conditions apply. Get very important details on the website.
A Quick Look at Community Theatre
Community theaters don’t have the overhead and complex logistics of the big players but they have their own scaled-down-in-size-but-not-importance concerns. Updates have been coming in slowly, telling of very ambitious downtime activities for some and basic regrouping for others. For most, planning is on a day-to-day basis. Keep checking websites for updates.
Vero Beach Theatre Guild

The new officers and board of directors are set to take over July 1. In the meantime:  Anyone who is holding an unused ticket for “Jesus Christ Superstar” or “Moonlight & Magnolias,” will be able to exchange those tickets for any show for our 2020 – 21 Season. We cannot guarantee your same seats, but will get you as close as we can to those same seats. Many of you already have your tickets here in the Box Office, which makes it easier for us to do the exchanges. When the time comes to exchange, you will be contacted directly. This may take a couple of months before this process is ready. Please be patient.

For those of you who have already purchased your next season tickets, we are doing our best to come up with solutions that will be to our customers’ satisfaction. As we have almost 500 customers to contact, we ask for your patience for just awhile longer. You will be contacted directly to make revised plans for the season. We are so sorry for any inconvenience this may be causing.

Thanks for your understanding during this time of uncertainty.

Pineapple Playhouse

From outgoing board member Ellen Gillette:

Pineapple Playhouse is looking forward to a fantastic new season for 2020-2021. They recently added three new board members and have moved the last two shows, postponed due to Covid-19, to the next season, subject to change. As they await further input from the state, it is even possible that a camp session for kids may be possible- stay tuned!

In the meantime, the March of the Hamiltons campaign continues to raise financial support. Patrons are encouraged to renew their memberships for years in advance or make tax deductible donations to this 501(c)3 organization that has been bringing quality entertainment to the Treasure Coat for almost 50 years. Email  info@pineappleplayhouse.com  or call 772-464-0366.
The Henegar Center
From Doug Lebo, The Henegar Center president:

Henegar Center productions remain on hold due to the Florida Governor’s executive order closing public venues and CDC recommendations to limit public gatherings.
Our next production of “GREASE” has been postponed during this closure, but it will be the first show to return to our stage when we open. While we have no exact date at this time, we are hopeful that “the show will go on” later this summer. When we have exact dates for the show opening we will call ALL current ticket holders to confirm new dates.
We are busy preparing for our re-opening and awaiting final health department guidelines on health standards, social spacing, and capacity limitations. When these plans are finalized we will contact all patrons affected and advise patrons of any required seating changes.
Our 2020-2021 Season opens in September and is still pressing forward. We are evaluating some minor scheduling changes, but are continuing with the slate of shows already announced. We will call all our Season Ticket holders if any changes are needed.
I can’t thank you enough for your support and patience during this unprecedented emergency. Please know that we will do everything possible to provide a safe environment for our patrons, performers, and staff. We look forward to returning to the stage and sharing great entertainment! We will all need it!

Summer camps are scheduled with registration happening now.
Special COVID-19 considerations for Henegar Summer Camps:
  • Class sizes will be limited to allow more social spacing.
  • Students will be socially spaced as much as possible during the rehearsal process. Student masks are not required, but may be used if student/parent prefers. We will implement healthy hygiene practices including hand washing and wiping surfaces.
  • During student drop-off we will perform screening protocols to include taking student temperature and asking of any COVID-19 related symptoms. We ask all students who are sick to stay home.
  • Henegar staff interactions with students will be limited to the actual instructors. Our staff will be screened each day and wear masks when within close proximity of students.
  • Special Refund Policy: If the camp needs to be cancelled prior to starting, full tuition will be refunded. If classes are interrupted or student become ill during the program, a pro-rated refund for the remainder of classes will be issued.
  • Email Melinda Benya with questions.
Surfside Playhouse

Bryan Bergeron, artistic director at Surfside Playhouse, emailed: " The theatre is concentrating on social media programs at the moment. The playhouse itself is closed and only open to a small group of people.
Financially, it’s, of course, very difficult. Our local community has stepped up with small dollar donations that have added up but this can only go on so long. We are so grateful for their financial support."

Online branding is the look of the future, Bergeron said. The goal of the brand building is to "create original online creative content that will eventually be commercialize d and provide a much needed funding stream for our non-profit theater."

Making accommodations for audience safety is doable and protocols are in place, Bergeron said, but that's only one consideration. "Protecting our cast members will, unfortunately, be much more complicated but together with our board of Governors and the local performers who long to be back on the stage, we will find creative solutions."

The Barn Theatre

From Dennis McGeady, VP of Marketing and Dir. of Photography at The Barn Theatre in Stuart.

Technical Director Bryan Childe and Master Carpenter Gus McCall have been hard at work cleaning and updating the theatre in preparation for welcoming audiences back following our present "intermission." Bryan said, “We redid the entire stage. We took down the old ceiling and put up a new one. We repainted the stage and rewired. We upgraded the green rooms and the dressing rooms and added new technology to the sound and lighting systems. We’re rearranging everything and taking things down and cleaning them.” It may be indelicate, but the lady was ready for some work. “I threw out 300 yards of wiring that was not needed and had accumulated over 50 years,” Childe said. “We rewired the new equipment. We even reinforced the beams. There are new floodlights for the parking lot. We did a deep cleaning. We’re trying to make it as professional as possible”.
Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse
From Associate Director Jeremy Phelps:

We are still having to take the situation with the ongoing COVID crisis on a day to day basis. The Governor still has not released theaters to perform which means we can not have our shows of Into the Woods (as scheduled.)

The new performance Dates for Into The Woods are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 18th, 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 19th, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, June 20th 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 21 at 2 p.m.( NOTE: These are subject to the reopening plans being approved by Governor Desantis). We are currently coming up with new dates for 9 to 5 and our Stars of Tomorrow programs as we will also have to push these productions back now as well. We have not been offering any virtual shows yet. But this is something are looking into as the current situation continues to extend the time we are unable to have guests in the theatre.

We do have a small skeleton crew working on deep cleaning the building, 2 box office staff members processing ticket exchanges and our volunteer team working on producing face masks for essential workers and hopefully our future audiences. Our set building team has been able to work on the scenery for 9 to 5 to some degree, as far as they have room to do so with Into The Woods still on the stage

A.C.T. Studio Theatre
From Dennis O'Donovan, executive director at A.C.T. Studio Theatre:

At A.C.T., our primary concern is people's health and safety. We don't plan to reopen until it is safe to do so, which means that we will want to see that other venues have opened without further increasing the number of COVID-19 cases in our area. Once we are able to open, we will continue to observe safety measures, including limiting our seating capacity, enforcing social distancing, and sanitizing our theatre between performances. Since the opening date is still undetermined, our programming schedule is being kept flexible, with some of our cancelled Spring shows moving into the Fall schedule. We are eager and excited to resume bringing our excellent shows to the community, which has been patient and gracious.

The Phoenix rising logo is " to represent the re-birth of a revitalized A.C.T.!"
Treasure Coast Theatre
From the Treasure Coast Theatre website:

At this writing, Five Women Wearing the Same Dress is still scheduled for a July 10 opening, with a full season through December planned. See the website for updates and information on contributing to help with the financial survival of the only community theater in Port St. Lucie..
Melbourne Civic Theatre
From MCT on Facebook:

After hearing from Governor DeSantis that we are still not allowed to open the theatre, and because of this ongoing uncertainty, we feel the best action is to issue gift cards to current ticket holders. As soon as we are able to open, you may redeem your gift card online at  mymct.org , or by phone at 321.723.6935.
Your gift card will be in your email next week, if you do not have email, it will come by regular mail. You may also donate your tickets back to the theatre.
The Box Office will be open Tues - Fri 11-3. Walk in patrons are requested to wear masks and maintain social distancing. Of course, phone calls and emails are encouraged.
We ask you to be patient with us.
New information will be updated on our website  mymct.org  and here as it becomes available.

Catching Up With Camy DeMario
It would take more than a global pandemic to hold Camy De Mario back. On May 3, she took over as president of the Vero Beach Art Club , dealing with the abbreviated 2020 Under the Oaks while planning for next year’s event as well as club events for the rest of 2020. The world has changed, she said, and so must the art club. More technology and virtual opportunities are in the future for club members. A virtual members art show online has been extended through June.

The new Vero Beach Art Club Annex that opened two doors down from Raw Space on Old Dixie Highway just in time to be shut down by COVID is acting as the club office while Vero Beach Museum of Art is closed.
Within the past six months, the self-taught artist has been collaborating on a short, animated movie with an animation studio in Greece, and then hit the morale-boosting jackpot with a call from her agent in Los Angeles.

“A movie production company wants to invest, produce, and distribute my feature animated film for TV, "The World of Happy, Let's All be Friends.” This is really a dream come true!” De Mario said.

That doesn’t mean dreaming is what makes things happen, though. “I believe that wonderful things happen because of our perseverance and dedication to make them happen. This has always been my mantra NEVER GIVE UP!”
“The World of Happy” has been De Mario’s baby for ten years and because she never gave up, “I have been rewarded with exciting developments and opportunities,” she said. The collaboration has produced an animated movie selected for the 2020 Vero Beach Wine+Film Festiva l, “The World of Happy - After the Storm, A Green Turtle Journey.” A children’s book with the same title as the movie is out in paperback and Kindle versions and available on amazon.com . “It’s a simple and colorful read for everyone, children and adults,” De Mario said.
The artist’s family led the way artistically for De Mario. “My grandfather and both of my parents were amazing artists. (A) story I don't share very often is that one of my ancestors on my father’s side was the original illustrator of the book "Pinocchio". His name was Carlo Chiostri, my maiden name.”

De Mario's work reflects her favorite subjects: Cartoon characters, ocean creatures, nature, and animals. She uses acrylics and mixed media for her art but “when it comes to developing my illustrations I prefer to use digital graphics.” Find De Mario on Facebook .

Keeping Literary Arts Alive in Indian River County

The Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation is proud to be a consistent source of poetic inspiration for the county and beyond. Through our regular programs and our current  Covid-19 writing competitions , people of all ages come together to learn to express themselves and to "bear witness" through writing.

One of our biggest events, the annual Poetry and BBQ, brings poets from all over the countr y to our town to share their poetic visions. Though our 10th Annual Poetry and BBQ was canceled due to Covid-19 this April, we are bringing you the voices of our previous poets who have agreed to record themselves in their various stay-at-home locations as a reminder of the importance of art and literature to the human experience, especially at a time like this. Enjoy these poets and their words as we add them one by one to our site, starting with our own Sean Sexton on our Featured Poets page  here.

We hope that you value the work that our foundation does and that you feel that supporting us in our continued efforts to keep writing alive in the community is a good idea.

Excerpts from an Op-Ed piece written for The Palm Beach Post by the Norton Museum of Art's director and CEO, Elliot Bostwick Davis, courtesy of the museum:

Where else but within art museums can we encounter so many powerful expressions of human emotions—awe, joy, sorrow, hope, self-understanding, appreciation, and above all, empathy. Now more than ever, with the unique public spaces of art museums shuttered, we long for a place that encourages us to explore the central role of artists in connecting us to each other and the world.
Of course, we will return to our communal spaces with changed perspectives and new experiences. I think particularly of Antony Gormley’s Total Strangers IV in our Goergen Sculpture Garden, a sculpture of three male figures cast in bronze that stand 6 feet apart with their backs to one another. When the public reenters our garden we may see these figures with fresh eyes as powerful reminders of the social-distancing protocols during COVID-19. What we see changes as we change. ...

As I think about our weeks in isolation, I am struck by the parallels with the early years of our institution. When the Nortons opened the Museum in 1941 the United States had witnessed the rise of Nazi Germany, yet remained in isolation, not yet fighting in World War II. During those dark days, the founders stated their bold vision for a Museum that would become the “outstanding institution for the advancement of the cultural life of the Palm Beaches, the State of Florida, and the South.” ...

With its unique combination of art collections, powerful architecture, intimate galleries, artists and performers in residence, and beckoning gardens, the Norton Museum of Art inspires greater empathy and a deeper sense of our shared humanity. As we look to celebrate our 80th birthday next year, we cannot wait to reopen our doors and welcome you back in person.

As always, For Helen Miller
Information is to be received in an email at least one week before publication.

Use this format:
Who (organization)
What (Event)
When (dates, time)
Where (Name of venue, address)
Why (a brief description of the purpose)
Web address
Contact for public (for tickets, questions, etc.)
Then add a short, descriptive release if available.
Send only one photo, with caption, until more are requested.
Media contact with email for my followup (not for publication)
Here's a suggestion for uploading information to calendars that allow you to input your own events.
In the body of the listing, sometimes called Description , make sure to include all dates in each upload. For example: Performances are on March 12-31; or the exhibit is open March 12, 14, 15, and 17. That information should be in all dates you post individually.

If you are a member of the  Cultural Council of Indian River County , you need this information:

IMPORTANT: In order to promote your events as a member of the Cultural Council, you must enter your event on the CCIRC calendar via this link:  https://www.calendarwiz.com/culturalcouncil and click on "Submit your event"
The deadline is MONDAY - 10 days prior to the Wednesday publication.
