The Ally: Reflecting on Black History Throughout The Year

As we did in 2021, we've had thoughtful discussions in February about Black History month and how to use it as an opportunity to grow and be challenged throughout the year. We hope the thoughts and resources shared by our staff and board members throughout the month will be meaningful to you. If you have a perspective you'd like to share, you can contact me at jhogge@faams.org or 601-355-0915.

This week we're re-sharing Henry Moore's 2021 blog about cultural humility. The lessons seem just as timely and relevant in 2022 as they did in 2021 ... perhaps even more so. There is much to ponder.

There are several upcoming events. I am touched and honored to be part of the Mississippi Recovery Advocacy Project's Virtual Town Hall on February 22 at 6 p.m. I hope you will join us.

Supportive Coaching for Parents Supporting Other Parents is on February 9 at noon. Anyone supporting parents in any system is welcome to attend. If you supervise parents supporting other parents, please encourage them to be part of this group.

The Joint Planning Council Meeting is on February 10 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. CST. Federal law specifies the duties of the Joint Mental Health Planning Councils:

  • To review the Mental Health Block Grant Plan and to make recommendations;
  • To serve as an advocate for adults with serious mental illness, children with a serious emotional disturbance, and other individuals with mental illnesses; and
  • To monitor, review, and evaluate, not less than once each year, the allocation and adequacy of mental health services within the State.

RESOURCES

Recovery community organizations have transformed the way recovery is approached in the U.S. But they need more than grassroots fundraising like bake sales and GoFundMe campaigns to sustain the essential work they do.

In my family, addiction was treated with the same love and affection as if I had suffered from any other potentially fatal illness.
