Access to technology engages students and builds confidence

Technology is used to enhance student learning at every level in the district, and it begins in the early grades. It is changing how teachers manage student data and how lessons are taught in the classroom. For families, communication with teachers and access to their student's information is just a keystroke away.

Recent visits to classrooms show how teachers are using technology in the elementary schools, how it complements other types of learning, and how it is impacting students' education. In the classroom technology is limited to age-appropriate lessons that engage students and accelerate them to deeper learning.

"Technology benefits students by giving them access to accommodations. Everyone has the access, and that makes it less isolating because they aren't the only one (or the few) with something 'special' to help out," says Carson Elementary fifth grade teacher Jennifer Matthews.

Stewart Elementary gets a very special visitor

Learning about community helpers took an interesting turn at Stewart Elementary on February 19. Kindergartners, first- and fourth graders met a very special visitor who works in our community every day.

Hansel the Arson Dog for Central Pierce Fire & Rescue came to demonstrate how he does his job. He brought his handler, Deputy Fire Marshall Chris Lorenz along with him to explain how they work together to get the job done.
