Rev. Dr. Jacob Mar Barnabas, OIC, Bishop of Gurgaon, India, passed away from complications from Covid-19 on August 26. He was a long-time professor and head of the department of Pastoral and Moral Theology at Jnana Deepa Vidhyapeeth (JDV) in Pune. On March 26, 2015, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Barnabas the first bishop of the newly established Syro-Malankara Catholic diocese of Gurgaon. He also served as the chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India Council for Women and a member of the Standing Committee. Some of the milestones from Bishop Barnabas' career can be found on his CV and his diocese remembers him with this letter and funeral mass. |

Rev. Dr. Peter Ignatius Gichure of the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru, Kenya, passed away on July 31. He was a professor and director of graduate studies at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). Upon Dr. Gichure's passing, Sr. Teresa Kiragu remarks that "a Mugumo tree has fallen" and reflects upon his contributions as an exceptional scholar, mentor, and community member. He will be missed by faith and university communities. |

The Response to the Sexual Abuse Crisis in the Catholic Church: Perspectives from Theological Ethics
On April 26 a Call for Papers for a collection of essays on this topic was sent throughout CTEWC, with proposals due to the project editors, Daniel Fleming, Jim Keenan, and Hans Zollner (President of the Centre for Child Protection) in early June.
Among suggested topics were:
· The protection of children and vulnerable persons;
· Transparency and accountability;
· The abuse and protection of adults;
· Contextual case studies of abuse and response to it;
· Best practices for responding to the double crises, i.e. abuse and its cover-up;
· Practices for resistance in the face of / or dealing with abuse of power;
· Responding to the double crises through reform
On July 4, the editors notified 25 authors that their proposals were accepted and that their full essays would be due by November 30. Editors will return the essays to the authors for final review in March 2022 with final submission to the editors due June 2022.
We will be publishing the collection in the CTEWC series housed with the Journal of Moral Theology where the volume will be fully accessible on-line and hard copies may be bought through Wipf and Stock.
While the book project goes forward, Fleming and Keenan will renew hosting their virtual table meetings in September.

Recent Publications
This book articulates, through diverse articles by African scholars, new trends in African Theology in a 'baraza' methodology, a Swahili word for a convened conversation aimed at deliberating issues facing a society. The book is a tribute to Rev. Professor Laurenti Magesa, who recently turned 75, and has immensely contributed to the development of African Theology.
This edited volume by leading and emerging ecofeminist voices analyzes and amplifies advocacy for gender and ecological justice in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, focusing on women who embody commitments to healing the earth and valuing lives rendered vulnerable by problematic social systems. The volume highlights scholarship on practical work by women globally, who labor toward greater justice in its multiple and intersecting dimensions and invites collaborative solidarity, advocacy for change, and realistic hope for the future.
Plenary Assembly
The Association of Consecrated Women in Eastern and Central Africa (ACWECA) held their 18th Plenary Assembly from 23rd-27th August. This video offers insight into the leadership and critical work that sisters do in the region. |

The Russian Journal of Philosophical Sciences is preparing a special issue on War and Reconciliation (with participation of the Institute for Theology and Peace Hamburg). Recent Publication
In recent weeks, the Pontifical Academy for Life has published a stimulating appeal that deserves attention from each of us. Entitled “Rescuing Fraternity Together - A call for Faith and Thought, ” a reflection is proposed on the role and function of thought - theological and otherwise - as a source of fraternity. As Antionio Autiero writes, "this is a significant attempt to create a network between people who are open to the search for meaning and promising ways of building fraternity."
