Businesses: OJT Training is Available!
Cost of training weighing your business down!
Use On-the-Job Training to help cover the costs

The CDO Workforce New York One-Stop System has On-the-Job Training (OJT) Funds available. The OJT funding provides companies with an incentive to hire and train individuals who lack the specific skills or experience for a job. OJT is appropriate for occupations where classroom training is not suitable and for which specific job skills can be learned by a worker while engaged in useful work. This program is for full-time (at least 32 hours per week) employment and cannot be used for seasonal, commission, or 1099 employment opportunities.

Business OJT users apply their own methods to teach workers the new skills necessary for successful employment within their company, while the trainee is performing productive tasks. OJT contracts can be written up to $2,000 per trainee depending on amount of training provided.
As a Business Using OJTs:
§ You make the hiring decision
§ You determine the job performance standards
§ You retain the right to terminate a trainee
§ You do not need to worry about paperwork; it’s handled efficiently by our OJT Representative
§ You receive 50% reimbursement of the trainee’s wages for the training period
§ We reimburse you with prompt payments

Eligible OJT Candidates are unemployed workers. Reimbursement is 50% of newly hired employee’s regular wage rate. The length of training time (which determines reimbursement amount) will vary and is determined by candidates training needs.

A CDO Workforce representative will start the process and assist the business in identifying candidates, writing the OJT Training Outline and Contract. Employment must be for a profit or not-for-profit business at a NYS location. For more information regarding grants and other CDO Workforce Business Services contact: Tylena Daniels at (607)-334-2201, ext. 128 / tdaniels@co.chenango.ny.us OR April Feyh at 607-832-5776 / april.feyh@co.delaware.ny.us OR Beth Kilts at 607-432-4800, ext. 116 / kiltsb@otsegocounty.com

Please Note: A signed OJT Contract must be in place before the candidate physically starts work, so please contact the Business Rep as soon as possible and before the candidate starts working. Contracts cannot be back-dated. Please note that obtaining an OJT contract will be contingent on funding availability, and the eligibility of the individual being hired must be confirmed.

Delaware Youth Get to Work!
CDO Workforce Delaware County Summer Youth Employment Program

Let’s hear it for the kids who weren’t afraid to get dirty and get to work this summer in their local communities! Some 50 Delaware County youth ages 14 to 20 could be found all across the county working at ice cream shops, parks, school camps, local farms and many other worksites through the CDO Workforce Delaware County Summer Youth Employment Program.

The program, which is funded through the Delaware County Department of Social Services and private grants such as the O’Connor Foundation, provides the opportunity for kids to earn a paycheck and develop working and life skills that will help them be successful long after the program ends.
The CDO Delaware County Summer Youth Employment Program provides not just opportunities that benefit local youth but also helps offset increasing high staffing costs to small businesses and farms. Without programs such as this many employers and agencies who would like to hire kids, but are feeling the budget crunch of a higher minimum wage, would be unable to do so. Additionally non-profits such as Senior Meals are provided with enthusiastic workers to help provide essential services, such as preparing nutritious meals for seniors.

The program not only benefits local youth and businesses but the greater community as a whole. This year a work crew of 4 youth prepared the fairgrounds for the Delaware County fair that brings in a much needed influx of revenue and entertainment.

So put your hands together for these awesome kids that worked so hard and learned so much! And thank you to all the local agencies and worksites that made it possible.

Featured Training Grant Opportunity
The Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations (WANTO) grant helps recruit, train, and retain women in quality pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs, and encourages them
to pursue apprenticeships and non-traditional occupations.

What are non-traditional occupations?

Non-traditional occupations are occupations where women make up 25% or less of the workforce, including but not limited to: trades, information technology (IT), advanced manufacturing, transportation, public safety, agriculture, and more.

A great example of a non-traditional occupation is a Millwright.
Women in the Field: Women currently only make up 4% of Millwrights.

What Does A Millwright Do?
  • Millwrights install, maintain, and repair factory equipment and other industrial machinery.

  • Work Environment: Workers in this occupation must follow safety precautions and use equipment, such as hard hats, safety glasses, and hearing protectors. Most work full time in manufacturing facilities. However, they may be on call and work night or weekend shifts. Overtime is common.

  • How to Become a Millwright: Millwrights typically need a high school diploma. Most Millwrights go through an apprenticeship program that may last up to 4 years.

  • Pay: The median annual wage for a Millwright was $54,920 in May 2020.

Job Outlook: Overall employment of Millwrights is projected to grow 13% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations.

The WANTO program is now enrolling! To learn more about this great opportunity and to find out if you are eligible, contact Project Manager Stephanie Heiland: 315.207.6951 x110

This program is available in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Onondaga, Otsego, Schoharie, St. Lawrence, Tioga and Tompkins counties.

This program is 100% funded by a United States Department of Labor grant administered by the Women’s Bureau and Employment and Training Administration of $716,676.00.
