Saskatchewan Cycling Association transgender policy aims to create welcoming space for all
Looking to provide access to programming and facilities where all individuals can feel comfortable and safe regardless of their gender identity and gender expression led the Saskatchewan Cycling Association to produce a transgender inclusion policy in 2019.

“We wanted to be able to start selling race licenses for male, female or unspecified,” said Sarah Honeysett, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Cycling Association. “And we thought with that, if we’re offering unspecified licenses, we should also be offering just some guidance to everyone about how it all ties together and how we want everyone to be treated with Sask Cycling.”

Dream Broker program helping introduce new faces to boxing
"When the students can use the same language and see Indigenous instructors who have done so well in the sport, it is a great boost of confidence."

Grade 9 students are adding boxing to the land-based curriculum at Saskatoon’s St. Frances Cree Bilingual School.

The students have taken to boxing thanks to the help of the Dream Broker program, which operates in 10 different schools across Saskatchewan helping to connect youth with sport, culture and recreation programs. St. Frances Cree Bilingual School is one of those schools, with the Grade 9 class also being a part of the land-based education program, which allows the students to take part in activities not possible in traditional learning.

Sport is for all
In 1998, legendary Canadian swimmer Mark Tewksbury became the first openly gay Canadian Olympian.

By coming out, the three-time Olympic medallist and holder of seven world records, helped start a national conversation for LGBTQ2SI+ athletes inclusion in sport. Since, he has become an advocate for inclusive and safe sport spaces and inspired other Canadian athletes to openly talk about sexuality and be themselves.

Tewksbury recently hosted 10 panels titled In Your Corner: Connecting LGBTQI2S Sport Communities for Egale. In Your Corner included panelists and fire-side chats with Canadian athletes and coaches from across the country discussing inclusion, human rights, mental health, history in sport and coaching.

From Prince Albert to Sweden: Danny Stone's journey to professional hockey
"When we get to be a part of certain events that are held just for Indigenous people, I can show everyone that I can do it, so you can too. I want younger kids to know there are possibilities, chances and opportunities in sport if they want them.”

Danielle (Danny) Stone is no stranger to sport.

Born and raised in Prince Albert, Stone played every sport she could from a young age, including track & field, basketball, soccer and hockey.

As a track athlete, she won multiple provincial medals and also competed and medalled at the 2008 North American Indigenous Games. On the hockey front, she played two seasons for Team Saskatchewan at the Aboriginal Hockey Championship, played for the Prince Albert Midget AAA Bears as well as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and now plays professional hockey in Sweden.

Member tip: Using inclusive and affirming language
Pronouns and names are not the only parts of language marked by gender. Everyday language is often gendered. By shifting this language to be more inclusive, one can respect and acknowledge the gender identities of all people.

Egale.ca has created some dos and don'ts to help individuals and organizations use more inclusive and affirming language.
