studentspotlightStudent Spotlight: Onaway Third-Grade Student Juliet Wolken

There's a tree in Onaway third-grade student Juliet Wolken's front yard with strips of fabric tied around some of the branches. On each strip of fabric, someone has written a heart-felt wish and tied it to the tree. One reads, "I wish to play with my friends soon." Another says, "That we all could be together." And yet another reads, "I wish that COVID-19 never happened."

Juliet had the idea to start her own wishtree after reading Katherine Applegate's book " Wishtree " with her grandmother via FaceTime during Ohio's stay-at-home order.

Wishtree is a delightful, touching book told by a 216-year-old oak tree named Red, who serves as the neighborhood wishtree-like Juliet's-where passers-by tie wishes around his branches. While the neighborhood is diverse, it's not always accepting. And that's where Red, who faces the threat of being cut down, steps in with the help of his nature friends.

employeespotlightEmployee Spotlight: AVI Food Service Director Mark Jacobs

Since Wednesday, March 18, AVI Food Service Director Mark Jacobs and his food service team have prepared and distributed between 350 to 400 meals daily. They make sure that any student who lives in the Shaker Heights Schools attendance zone and who needs or wants breakfast and lunch every day gets those meals, weekends included.

Whether Mr. Jacobs and the AVI team are officially classified as "essential workers" makes no difference to them. What has been essential to them is that no Shaker Heights Student goes hungry during the school closure or, moving forward, into the summer.

"We're a tight-knit bunch," says Mr. Jacobs, a food service industry veteran who just joined the AVI team at Shaker Heights Schools this year. "And our goal is to come in and to do what we have to do to provide the students with what they need."

Each scholar is selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors who evaluate information submitted by Finalists and their high schools, including academic record, scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), contributions in school and community activities, essays written by the Finalists and a recommendation by a high school official.
