December 2022
Message from IGM Director David Schwartz:

Hi all—by the time you see this note, we’re getting close to the end of Fall 2022’s semester, the most in-person semester we’ve had in a while.

Justus Robertson (new assistant professor, teaching and researching game AI) is getting to know students. We just hired Jake Adams into as a full-time lecturer (check out his work on Holographic Comics), and we’re searching for the next assistant or associate professor. The Niantic GeoGames lab is hosting students and faculty, and CAD’s 3DDD-game-arts degree is off an running! Yes… games+art is a “thing” at a RIT.

Behind the scenes, we’re planning to bring faculty and students to GDC, and NMID has restructured the capstone classes. Our undergraduate program coordinator is also working with the College of Liberal Arts on new double majors! We’ve been running the IGM Games Showcase, too—stay tuned for that.

A lots happening … please feel free to ping any time.
Thanks! Director Dave
Faculty Spotlight: Justus Robertson
Justus Robertson is an Assistant Professor in the School of Interactive Games and Media. His research focuses on human-centered artificial intelligence, computer games, and interactive narrative. Justus earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from North Carolina State University and worked as a postdoc in the department of Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media at the University of York in the UK. At York, Justus was a part of the Weavr project, a consortium of academic and industry partners building a mixed reality data analytics platform for esports, where he wrote production software and conducted human subjects experiments to validate research for the platform.

Justus recently joined RIT from Kennesaw State University where he was an Assistant Professor in their Department of Software Engineering and Game Design. Earlier this year, Justus was awarded a Computer and Information Science and Engineering Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) grant by the NSF Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) to apply deep learning to automated interactive storytelling. Justus plans to build a research program at RIT that leverages this AI platform for new kinds of serious games and XR environments.
Meet the IGM Student Ambassadors
The IGM Student Success Task Force is looking for company swag to offer as prizes for our annual Game Showcase taking place in April 2023 and other IGM events and/or competitions. Our students love having the opportunity to represent brands they vibe with through wearing their t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, or other company gear.

If you or your organization would be interested in donating some swag, please contact Micah at mxaigm@rit.edu
Student Spotlight: Will Creighton

a second year student at RIT majoring in Game Design and Development. He participated in Roblox's Accelorator Program.

IGM's Marketing & Student Experience Coordinator, Micah, interviewed Will to discuss his recent experience with Roblox.
Micah: How did you first got involved with Roblox?

Will: Roblox had posted about a competition for aspiring game developers to submit their game pitch ideas. So, I formed a development team- Marcus Túlio, Emre Soylu, Logan Hunt, and Abishanan Sriranjan- and we began working on a magic arena style fighting game.

It took some time but we were later contacted by Roblox to do a formal zoom presentation for our game pitch.

Micah: What was the presentation like?

Will: I was super nervous for it but it was great- Professor Adams helped me prepare for it since I'd never done something like this before. We presented our project to a group of Roblox game developers and other employees and ended up having a great time. Everything went well- they were smiling and asking us questions and giving us feedback. We also got to ask questions about the Accelorator Program, which you got into by winning the competition.

Micah: When did you find out you won?

Will: One of my good friends and I went to Beanz to get smoothies and as we were in line I got an email from Roblox that said, "Congratulations! we picked your game". That's when we found out about our acceptance into Roblox's Accelorator Program.

Micah: Can you tell me more about your experience in the Accelorator Program?

Will: It was amazing! My team and I got assinged a group of professional game developers with 10+ years of industry experience that mentored us. They gave us advice for things like game dev 101, user experience, and technical stuff. We were able to go to them with our game prototypes and they'd playtest them, help us problem solve and imporve.

I am so grateful for this experience, it gave me the oppurtunity to get my work in front of major industry professionals, meet new people, get new opportunities, and grow. At first, I was nervous to enter the professional gaming community but Roblox was a really cool company to work with and they seem to value their employees.

Micah: What are current projects that you're working on?

Will: I'm currently working on a game with some of my previous team members [Marcus and Emre] called Monster Race. In the game, you get to race monsters! It's a multiplayer format and you get to customize your monster.

Micah: What advice would you have for other students?

Will: I didn't think I was ready for something like this but I still went for it. Regardless of your fears, go for it because you never know what incredible oppurtunites could come from it.
