SCRC'S Caregiver of the Month Spotlight: Deborah
My name is Deborah Maddern and I am a caregiver for my husband, Ronald, who is a Veteran. He has been in an electronic wheelchair since the end of 2000 and uses the wheelchair for long distance at places like malls, grocery stores, and the beach. He can walk some, but he gets very tired. As his caregiver, I manage a lot of his daily needs. I keep track of his medication, administer his dosage, keep a calendar of appointments for Ronald, his service dog, and myself. Because of his limited vision, I need to watch him closely to prevent falls. His unsteady gait and hearing loss can be a challenge which can feel overwhelming at times. That’s when I know I need to take a breather.
"Southern Caregiver Resource Center has been my support for almost 10 years. They have provided me with respite hours so that I could take care of him while preserving some extra time for myself. Their classes have helped me learn more about caregiving and if I have issues, problems, or just a question, I reach out to my Family Consultant who guides me each step of the way."
