The Jewish Federation of Greater Fairfield County's

Civil Rights Mission

From the Jewish Federation:

"Walk in Dr. King's footsteps. Travel with us to Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham to better understand the movements that paved the way for our efforts to help build a just and equitable world. Experience a unique mission that explores Jewish involvement in the Civil Rights struggle in America. Reserve your seat now!"

From Cantor Harriet:

"I have been asked to attend as one of four clergy that will participate and accompany this trip. Part of my participation will include singing at the Memorial for Victims of Lynching. The link below includes the details regarding itinerary and cost. The trip is limited to 50 people and is filling up. I would like for TBC folks to have the opportunity to attend with me!"

New TBC Social Action Program Initiatives for 5783!

Thanks to all those who voted to select TBC's new social action initiatives for the year. The three areas that rose to the top were:

Other issues received many votes, and it was exciting and impressive to see the overall level of engagement by our members and families!

NEXT STEPS: The Social Action Planning Task Force will be reaching out to those who voted to discuss initial action items and to prepare for a special congregational program on social action tentatively scheduled for December 4.

TBC will of course continue to engage in our existing, important social action / Tikkun Olam projects and support others that may arise, but in this exciting new set of initiatives we hope to achieve even more through focused community action, partnering when possible with other congregations, the URJ, and other relevant external organizations.

If you have questions or wish to help shape our social action agenda, please send email to tbc-time-for-action@googlegroups.com

Share Your Simcha! TBC congregants are invited to share news of their family events and celebrations in Chailites. Please send your information to chailites@templebnaichaim.org.

"Pam Klem and Tom Dubin would like to kvell very loudly that our daughter Emma, who is very much a daughter of TBC as well, is recently ENGAGED to Ian Eppler. Ian is a mensch in every way and we could not be more delighted to welcome him into our family. TBC congregants may have caught a glimpse of him in the COVID-constrained Rosh Hashanah 2020, when Stella blew the shofar from the synagogue steps to a socially distant crowd assembled in the parking lot, and Ian rented an ENORMOUS PICKUP TRUCK with very macho wheels, in order that our family had a suitable perch from which to watch her. That's the kind of guy he is. You'll be seeing more of him in the months ahead."

Rise Against Hunger Thank You!

At Rise Against Hunger on October 22, the Wilton Community packaged 135,432 meals with over 600 volunteers participating. It was a spectacular event. Below is a thank you from Lauren Hughes, Wilton Social Services coordinator and Wilton Food Pantry director for all of the items collected at the event.

"What an amazing donation for the Pantry from Rise Against Hunger. I don’t think in all the years I have been working in the pantry I have ever seen such an enormous donation from a single food drive. I think there were easily 70 bags and boxes of food. It took most of the day but everything made it to the shelves and the shoppers who came today all remarked on the quantity and variety of items.

Please share our gratitude with all who gave so generously and please let them know how very much their donations were appreciated by the pantry shoppers.

Gratefully yours,

Lauren"

Wilton High Holiday Food/Diaper Collection Huge Success!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to make our High Holiday Food/Diaper Collection a huge success. A special thank you to the Heft children for their $1350 donation they raised on Facebook from a distance in honor of their father Michael, a TBC Youth Director and teacher and Miriam Messe, teacher and TBC volunteer. Items and monetary donations were sent to the Redding Food Pantry, Wilton Food Pantry, Community Action Agency and Danbury Women’s Center.

Jane Alexander and Peggy Zamore, Social Action Co-chairs

In this issue of Chailites we thank the following individuals who generously contributed to TBC during September 2022. To everyone who has supported TBC, we offer you our most sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude.

Ten Minutes of Torah!

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) provides rich resources for Torah study from a Reform perspective. Their Torah Study website includes "The Torah Explained," "Torah Portion Calendar" and an overview of each week's Torah portion.

In addition, several days a week, the URJ publishes Ten Minutes of Torah. Join the thousands of others who open their email to study a commentary on the week's Torah portion, read about a significant moment in Jewish history, connect with life in Israel, or learn about an upcoming holiday. In just ten minutes, you can add to your Jewish knowledge.

It is traditional to light a memorial candle at home on the eve of the yahrzeit. You may also find it meaningful while kindling the yahrzeit candle to offer prayers of remembrance or reflect on your loved one’s life. Many also choose this time to make monetary donations in memory of loved ones
