Maryland Ensemble Theatre Presents:

THE REVOLUTIONISTS

Aug 31, 2021, Frederick, MD - Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET)’s Mainstage raises the curtain on it’s 24th Season with the side-splitting satire The Revolutionists by Lauren Gunderson. Associate Artist Director Gené Fouché directs MET’s first production for an in-person audience in their Mainstage space since March 2020. Running September 17 - October 17, audiences are sure to love laughing together at this thought-provoking comedy set during the French Revolution’s reign of terror.

The Revolutionists presents a true story, or a total fiction, in which Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris. This grand and dream-tweaked comedy by Lauren Gunderson is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world. The show features MET Company Members Lisa Burl as Olympe, Mikayla Domingo as Charlotte, Jennifer Pagano as Marie; and Rachel Manu as Marianne.

When we think of the French Revolution, we certainly don't think, "Comedy!" yet, that's just what this play is,” says Director Gené Fouché, remarking on why she loves the show. “It's my type of play: it starts as a pretty broad comedy, then moves into a more serious space, and then becomes very moving by the end. It will certainly take the audience for a ride.” Helping to keep the ride moving are Stage Manager Lauren Johnson, Assistant Stage Manager Lauren McKenna, Set and Props Designer Alexander Breck, Lighting Designer Doug Grove, Sound Designer Kaydin Hamby, Costume Designer Rachel Smith, Production Manager Melynda Wintrol, and Master Carpenter & Electrician Cody James.

Audiences can see The Revolutionists at Maryland Ensemble Theatre (31 W Patrick St. Frederick, MD). Performances will take place September 17 through October 17 with evening performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm and a 3 pm matinee on Sundays. Audiences are required to provide proof of vaccination (or a negative COVID test w/in 72 hours of attendance) and mask for MET performances. Tickets are $28 and are available to purchase at https://marylandensemble.org/the-revolutionists
