“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Isaiah 53:5
"Reserved For Sick Patients"
I finally gave up.
I had what I thought was a cold. My symptoms were just like the Nyquil ad so I popped two pills, after all, it is …
“The nighttime sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever, so you can rest medicine”.
But there would be no resting. After three nights of no sleep, and unbearable throat pain, I went to the doctor. I thought I could fight it myself, but there was nothing I could do. Reality sunk in, I was sick and I needed a doctor.
The next morning I checked into the doctor’s office, which was a challenge since my voice was gone. The patient lady at the front desk handed me an iPad for registration and escorted me down the hall where she pointed to two empty seats. “Wait here and the nurse will come out the side door to get you.” When I looked down, both seats were labeled:
“Reserved for Sick Patients.”
Well… that was me, sick, and now I had my own special seat.
Sunday we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus and I am excited to celebrate with all of you. Before Jesus was crucified people ridiculed him for talking to sinners. In fact, Jesus was with Levi when the religious leaders and Pharisees said, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard them he said,
“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Who did Jesus come for? Sinners like you and me.
If you don’t think you are a sinner, you are just like me. Don’t be foolish, you are sick. Remember the Apostle Paul’s words in Romans 3, “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” We all have come down with it, bedridden with sin, destined to hell, foolishly trying to take care of it on our own. Reality sinks in, we are sinners, and we must repent and turn to Jesus.
Our Lord could have left us sniveling sinners in misery, surrounded by dirty tissues of pride, but he didn’t. Our Lord could have labeled his ‘special seats’ for only good, upstanding people, but he didn’t. Jesus came to save sinners. Sunday we celebrate sin’s ultimate cure - our crucified and risen Lord Jesus Christ.
I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling better already.
See you Sunday as we continue The Story- chapter 27 “The Resurrection.” Easter in October!
