Conference of Catholic Bishops: Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
Ending hunger can start with a heartfelt letter.

Sounds easy, doesn't it? In a few simple steps that take just minutes, we can advocate for our brothers and sisters among us that are food insecure. Bread For The World has had success as a non-partisan global organization focusing on ending world hunger. Have faith. End hunger. Locally, a Bread For The World chapter meets monthly led by Father Marty Peter.

Step One: You will need your Zip +4 or 9-digit zip code, a lookup button is below. Click on the gold button below to take you to the secure site at Bread For The World

Step Two: Complete your contact information. This will automatically sign and verify your letter.

Step Three: Using the letter on the screen, add your personal concerns or reasons for writing, and perhaps a unique subject line. Please do not change the two starred items being advocated for. When complete, click on Send Your Message. Based on your Zip +4, the letter automatically goes to your tow senators and your representative.

Step Four: Please let Mike Spencer know you have completed this at mspencer@alumni.nd.edu

Or, you may download a letter template here, and craft your own letters to your senators and your representative adding your personal concerns. Drop off at church in the Offering Of Letters envelope in the coat closet. We will deliver to the representatives.

Offering of Letters culminates with Hunger Weekend at St. Bartholomew, May 22 and 23 at all Masses. Continue to advocate and pray!

How does this fit in the Peace and Justice Mission, Vision and Goals, and our responsibilities for advocacy, volunteerism, education, outreach and financial support as we have stated?
We are called to assist parishioners to align faith with daily life.
We are called to live differently in society as a reflection of our faith.

Advocacy:
We are called to advocate for social mission (Outreach, Justice, and Spirituality) within the Parish.
We are able to speak up for positive change and an end to hunger in our own communities, our state, our nation, and our global community. It has been proven that letters to our representatives carry a powerful message of care and concern. Currently, due to the pandemic, emailed letters are possibly even more effective at reaching those who make the decisions for food assistance.

Will you take the few minutes required to speak up for the poor and vulnerable among us?
A PRAYER FOR OFFERING OF LETTERS SUNDAY
Gracious God, you have called us, through your prophets and your Son, Jesus Christ, to live out your vision of a world without hunger. Trusting in your love and mercy, we lift our voices and pray alongside all those who suffer from malnutrition and its devastating impacts.

We share your deep love and concern for all who experience hunger and poverty, and we desire that all may prosper and be in good health.

Bless these letters that our words may touch the hearts and minds of members of Congress and embolden our elected officials to increase our nation’s commitment and investment in global nutrition programs.

With gratitude for our nation’s leadership and the world’s progress in ending hunger, we present these letters in the name of Jesus Christ, the source of all our hope.

Amen
