MUSD promotes from within to fill two elementary school principal vacancies
|
Assistant Principals Stephanie Park and Deanna Sainten were announced as the new site leaders at Curtner and Weller Elementary Schools, respectively, at the May 26 Milpitas Unified School District Board of Education meeting.
Park, an assistant principal at Spangler Elementary School in her second year with MUSD, returns to Curtner where she previously served as the primary school’s assistant principal. Prior to that, Park, who earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from Santa Clara University, spent nearly 14 years as a teaching lead with Cupertino Union School District.
“She’s a person who listens deeply and thoughtfully, and has a record of bringing people together and has strong instructional leadership,” said Superintendent Cheryl Jordan, sharing that Park was volunteering in Washington Heights, N.Y. when she “found a sense of purpose in connecting with students and families in a way that brought them an ability to dig deeper in their learning.”
Sainten, the MUSD Educator of the Year in 2012, has spent her entire professional career at Pomeroy Elementary School spanning nearly 14 years as a student-teacher, teacher, and assistant principal. During her MUSD tenure, Sainten took on prominent roles in PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), Summit Personalized Learning Platform, where she developed grade-level curriculum, and African Ancestry Success Community, where she recruited and trained high school students to mentor elementary school students.

Michelle Eacret, senior administrative secretary in MUSD Learning & Development Department, gathered fabric and started making facemask coverings for the local community under her new venture, M.E. Designs.

District leadership recognized KLA Corporation for its continued to support of MUSD programs, initiatives, students, and staff.

Burnett Elementary engages students, keeps them connected with distance learning
|
|
Principal Hanna Asrat and the Burnett Elementary School community shared how the team has been engaging students through distance learning over the last 71 days of Sheltering in Place.
Asrat was joined by Assistant Principal David Kennedy, sixth grade teacher Kristian Lecours, RSP instructional assistant Lynda Brown, PTA president Jasvir Singh, and sixth grader Markson Pham.
Innovative, creative and unique were words used to describe how the
Burnett
staff has deployed the
Educate Everywhere
distance learning model at their site. Asrat said the goal has been to keep students connected as a school community throughout this challenging time.
While using Google Classroom as the main platform to connect teachers with their students, Burnett staff sends out daily emails with class assignments to both students and parents to maintain a school day routine. At the end of the week, staff posts a weekly summary, with student highlights. In addition, they have live math lessons each day for students who need the hands-on instruction and social interaction. Finally, there are themes for each day of the week: Mythology Monday, Tune Tuesday, Mindfulness Wednesday, TikTok Thursday, and Kahoot Friday.
Support staff has initiated small group virtual meetups for students who need the additional help, and they talk regularly about what’s going on in their lives during the COVID-19 environment. To ensure all students are staying connected, staff also has reached out to families via phone calls, ParentSquare and emails to see the best way to assist them.
