Welcome to Quilting News
December 2022
Message from Lisa
As I sit here to write this December newsletter I can't believe that this year is almost at an end. This year has been busy and full of all kinds of trips and fun events that I have been fortunate to do because of all of you making by business very successful and a happy place to be every day. I can't wait to see what the future holds for all of us and we GROW!

Please make sure you check out all that we have below. We have the Wool group that has some exciting projects planned for the next few months. Anyone can join this group if you want to learn about the many ways you can use wool. I see a future down the road that I hope to be able to sell wool if I can make the right contacts for supplies.

We also have our Quilting Sister's who will meet the FIRST Saturday in December because of the Santa Breakfast at the fire house. We have many months of projects lined up and ready for the group to make. Again anyone can join this group. December will be full of fun and a project in the middle.

Quilting Daycare is still full and you will find lots of laughter and talking during our days. This group again has grown to fill our available seats for now. We will let you know if a seat becomes available anytime soon.

Classes and more classes. I'm starting to put a class each month on my schedule. If you have something you want to learn I will do my best to offer it if there are others who want to take the class. We have the Cross class in January and I'm going to offer the Crow class in February. I also have another one that will be a weekly class. It will last about 5 weeks. Each row is different and I will provide you with the first block cut from my stash and you will need to make the rest from your stash. It is themed Red, White and Blue. Will explain more later.

EVERYONE is invited to my house after Christmas on Thursday for a Customer Appreciation Gathering. I will be closed the week after Christmas but I want to have everyone over to my house for a little social and eating. See the invite below.

Well, I hope each of you have a wonderful Christmas season and I hope you have all your presents wrapped and ready for Santa to come! I will be one of these days.

Well, check below for all that we have scheduled and make sure you put these dates on your calendar.

Excited for all the new things happening at Shining Star! Trixie and I will see you very soon.

Quilting Sister's

Do you like to sew for charity? Do you like to sew with friends? Come join our new group of quilter's who have a passion to make items and give back to the community. We will be using the conference room at the Firehouse off of Urbine Road in Powhatan. We start at 9 AM and sew until 3 PM.

At our November meeting we divided up the group into three teams. Each team had a leader who had planned out a quilt in advance. Each team sewed with their leaders and we finished two and just about the third one. It was a fun day and for some it was a stressful day. But we had a great time working together on these quilts. We will donate these three quilts to the fire departments in Powhatan County. We have two more to make.
While we were there that Saturday, I presented Church Urbine with a Service quilt for being a Veteran. We surprised him while he was packing the stew the firehouse had just made. He was very grateful and shared with the group about his father who served in WWI and then he and his brothers all served. He thanked us over and over. It was great to see his smiling face as I called for him to come up front and present him with a quilt.

We came up with a list of future projects for the group and one of our projects was to make quilts for the Habitat House new family. I have great news I will share at our December meeting. If you have a future project that we could help out with, just let me know and we will add it to our list.

For December our meeting is the FIRST Saturday. That is this weekend! Due to the firehouse having the Santa Breakfast on week two. So this Saturday we have a lot going on. First it is a Pot Luck Breakfast. I will attach the list of signed up items. We have asked also for each person to bring a item for our Silent Auction that will be going on during our meeting. This will help our group start a fund for our future project needs as they arise. Lastly, you will need your sewing machine as we will be working on the little heart pillows for the MCV/VCU NICU unit. White thread is recommended, a pencil or pen for tracing and your usual sewing bag with your items.

Sandie (apple juice/orange juice), Jan (grape salad), Merci (Egg and Sausage Casserole), Delma (Bagels & Cream cheese), Patty (donuts), Linda C. ( Apple and Sausage Pie), Bernadette (Breakfast Casserole), Jeanette (Quiche), Teri (kerig with coffee and fixings), Laura M. (food), Betsy (surprise), Colleen & Midge (Yogurt Bar), and Lisa has paper products.

Until we see each other... Keep on Quilting my Sister's
Wooly Friends Group
Welcome to a very new and special group of ladies. Our next meeting is Tuesday, December 20th. Doors open at 9 AM. This group has room for more people. So if you have wanted to learn how to do wool projects or where to start, then you need to be at our next meeting.

Our November meeting was so much fun. Phyllis brought her Sizzix machine and we cut wool pennies in 3 different sizes. I'm excited to see what what each person will make with their goodies! We also came up with a list of events for the next several month and will have a host person doing each event since wool in not my thing quite yet. I have a lot to learn still and what great teachers we have in our group.

For our December meeting we will be making wool wreathes and we will be using the Sizzix machine to cut our fringe strips for our wreathes. Phyllis brought a sample to our last meeting and everyone was excited about this project. So if you want to join us here is what you need to bring with you:

  • Metal Ring (Phyllis has them the cost is $1.50 each)
  • 2 - 6" x 24" green wool or wool felt (your choice)
  • Glue (Phyllis uses Roxanne glue) bring your favorite
  • tiny clothespins or something to hold the end while wrapping
  • strip of wool for the bow or decorations

Here is a link to make a cute popcorn garland to wrap on your wreath if you want. Just copy the link and paste in your browser. Very Cute....

Phyllis will have her cutting machine here for cutting the wool before we start. I hope you are as excited as I am for this event. Also we will be exchanging a wool Christmas ornament that day. Please make one and bring wrapped and we will have some kind of exchange that day. Also if you want to bring a food item to nibble on while we work that would be great!

Future Projects:
January - Wooly Pine (Darlene Vincent)
February - Wool Christmas Trees (Phyllis)
March - Not sure yet....
April - Lilac Sprays

New Favorite Wool Site: Old Tattered Flag. I just love all her stuff and thanks for sharing this location with the group. We now have several of the dies .
Cross Class in 2023
I have been asked by several quilter's to have this class. January 28th for this class. If you would be interested in making this beautiful quilt with your colors of choice, then let me know so I can add you to the class list. The class will cost $25.00 and once your spot has been paid in full, I will give you the material specifications for the quilt. It measures about 48" x 66" depending on how big your borders are. So it could possibly be a little bigger.

Class is a Saturday, and starts at 9 AM.

Signed up so far: Barbara Bonaquisti, Sherry Elwell, Anna Helms, and Cindy Farinholt. We can take 10 for this class. I will email the fabric requirements out shortly. Thanks.
Crow Quilt for 2023
This is a fun quilt to make. I just have this thing for crows now. So I made this about a month ago and it hangs in my family room. So again I have been asked to teach this class. The date is Saturday, February 18th and the cost is $25.00. Class is a Saturday, and starts at 9 AM. If you would like to take this class your payment will hold your spot and I will send out the fabric requirements. It is a great project and not very hard. So if this interest you, please sign up!

Machines for Sale
Have you been dreaming of owning one of my painted 301 Singer machines? Well this is your lucky day. Paint Job #2 is ready for a new home. This one comes with a cabinet and is a short bed. So it would love to come and stay in your home for you to enjoy each day and sew with each day. I have been working on it for the past month and it is the best sewing machine in my mind. I love a 301 in any color. To take this one home today the price is $500.00. Just give me a call and I can let you have a test run in my studio. You will fall in love!!!! Best decision you will make ever.

Also Sue Cuzzocreo has a cute little baby lock that she has for sale. This would make a great machine for a new quilter or for retreats. She is asking $75.00 for it. I have looked her over and given her a little oil and tested the stitching. It's in great working order. If you would be interested, just let Sue or myself know.
CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY
As a "Thank You" to all of my customers and quilting friends here locally, I would love for you to just have a day to be treated. So I'm opening up my personal home to all of you for some food and laughter and a day to just let loose and enjoy yourself. Please mark your calendars for Thursday, December 29th from 11 am to 2 pm. Trixie and I would really enjoy seeing all of you after Christmas and share our home with you. We are looking forward to this special day.
