A Message from Pastor Austin

This past week, I watched a new movie on Apple TV titled, “Greyhound.” The heart-stopping, action-packed drama depicts the wages of war on the North Atlantic in 1942. Cargo ships were being sunk by Nazi U-boats and it was the task of warships like the U.S Navy Destroyer Greyhound to protect the defenseless ships. Captain Ernest Krause courageously leads his troops on his first command through what was known as the treacherous “Black Pit.”

The movie was spectacular, but what really caught my attention was the prayer that the good Captain whispered at the beginning of this mission and at the end. He was hunched over his bed, on his knees, and prayed a prayer I was familiar with. I proclaimed, “Hey, that’s Luther’s morning prayer!” A few scenes later the good captain can be seen tying his shoes. The scene fades out and shows a card sticking out from his locker that reads,

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8

At the end of the movie when the shooting stops and they are heading to port, before he lies his exhausted head on his fluffy pillow, the captain once again falls on his knees and prays.

If you have a chance, I highly recommend the movie as it puts you in the boat with a captain who relies on Jesus Christ as his Captain through it all. I know right now you and I are all being tossed to and fro by endless waves or change. We are not being hunted down by Nazi U-boats but we are haunted by anxiety, fear, and doubt. Perhaps Captain Krause’s biggest achievement wasn’t in the captain’s chair or on his feet shouting commands. Instead the captain was on his knees praying to his Lord who was sufficient.

“I thank you, my Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.” -Luther's Morning Prayer

Austin
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
