Day 43:  Across the Ocean for Art Jewelry in Fort Collins, Colorado

Destination:   Fort Collins, Colorado
Fort Collins is located 56 miles north of Denver. Situated on the Cache La Poudre River along the Colorado Front Range, Fort Collins is a vibrant town full of local eateries, pubs, boutiques and home to Colorado State University.

Fort Collins has around 300 days of sunshine. The summers are warm and mostly clear, the winters are freezing, dry, windy, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature is rarely below 3°F or above 96°F.

Fun Facts:
Disneyland's Main Street USA is modeled after Historic Old Town Fort Collins. Harper Goff, a Hollywood art director, drew sketches for Walt Disney, based off his childhood memories of the buildings in Old Town Fort Collins.

Also:  Seventy percent of Colorado's Craft Beer is made in Fort Collins.

Art Form: Illustrated Art & DC Designs
DC Designs Jewelry handcrafts every one of their earrings and pendants using stunning photographic or painted images from Colorado and other nature landscapes.
IHT AspenFall

The jewelry line was created after someone suggested making pendants from David Clack's nature images on 1" metal tiles with a black cord. These were incredibly popular, and customers wanted more. Soon they expanded their designs to include earrings to match.
IHT Columbine

For years, David had the idea of taking several of his nature landscape images and layering them together, creating multiple exposure abstract images. By allowing some of the underlying images to shine through, colors and textures appear in beautiful ways.  These photos from David's Clack's portfolio have become a part of our jewelry line, and they are incredibly popular.

Alongside the photographic jewelry designed by David Clack, Illustrated Light has partnered with artist Shelly Hearne. Her delicate artwork and designs are available in a wide variety of their jewelry styles.

All of their products are hypo-allergenic and contain no nickel. The ear wires are made of antique copper on steel or sterling silver plated. The prints are UV protected and water resistant.

"As a young boy, I would hike and camp  throughout the Colorado wilderness. I marveled at the beauty and purity of it all: the crisp, clean air and the sound of wind rustling through the tops of ponderosa pine. Growing older I wondered: 'Where did all this come from, how could something so beautiful exist?'..."

David Clack has been a professional photographer for the past 23 years. He started his career as a biomedical photographer at Colorado State University. David is the CEO of Colorado Photographics, Inc., formed in 1985. In 1990,

David served on the community advisory board for One West Contemporary Art Center, now the Museum of Contemporary Art (COCA). He also help co-found the Center of Fine Art Photography. David's first book "Colorado Fine Art Landscape & Nature Photography" was published in 1998. He has been selling his prints in galleries throughout Colorado for many years. In 2002, David was invited to be a keynote speaker at the United Nations "Year of the Mountain" conference in Malaysia, speaking on photographing the Rocky Mountains.

Shelly Hearne:
Shelly Hearne
"From growing up on Cape Cod, to raising my own family in Colorado, my life has continually been filled with movement and color - the most essential elements of my work. I grew up, one of six children, in a little town called Falmouth, Massachusetts. It was during high school that I first discovered my appreciation for art, and that I had a knack for it.

Not knowing what to do, and needing a change of environment, I joined the Air Force after graduation. During my service, I was fortunate enough to travel and to see the world through a different lens. During my final years in the reserves, I began focusing more on art and earned a degree in interior design.

I found that this type of work did not
Calla Lillies
allow me the creative expression for which I was searching, so I began painting again. I taught myself, through trial and error, to capture the curve of a calla lily, the rolling shadows of a mountain and the ever-changing colors of a forest.

My artistic influences include the works of Wolf Kahn and Georgia O'Keefe, among others. I hope to evoke from my viewers exactly what I derive from the work myself: feeling, spirit and passion."

The Company:  Illustrated Light and DC Designs
   After establishing  Colorado Photographics, Inc.,
David Clack, president and founder, started focusing on nature and landscape photography, primarily the Colorado landscape. In 2002 the Illustrated Light Gallery of fine art photography opened its doors. Soon after, they started producing various products using David's photography, and Illustrated Light Gifts and DC Designs Jewelry were born.
All of their products are handcrafted in their studio in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Where to next? Stay tuned!

Today as I stepped out into the quiet sunshine and peacefulness of the morning, I was also well aware that all around us there is unsettledness, hurt, frustration and anger. In a little while I will go into our quiet store and gaze at the amazing artwork and textiles created and fashioned by the hands of people from all over our world - people of many colors and faiths and cultures. My heart hurts.

I struggle with words but feel those of Julián Zugazagoitia, Director of our Kansas City  Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art express my thoughts this morning.  "We feel the hurt of the nation. At the museum, our priorities remain firmly in place: to care for our community, to care for our works of art, and to further a quest for inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. . .  The museum stands solidly behind Kansas City's pursuit of social justice and champions human expression." May it be so.
