There was a sea of American flags and students in red, white, and blue across the Roslyn School District on Thursday, November 10th, in honor of Veterans Day. School-wide assemblies were held at East Hills and Harbor Hill to pay tribute to local veterans.

Nearly 100 bags, containing a turkey and all the fixings of a traditional Thanksgiving meal, were packed by the Roslyn PFA and made available for pick up at Heights for local families experiencing food insecurity. Each bag inclhe bags included nside each bag were hand-colored cards, crafted by young students to wish the families a Happy Thanksgiving.

Ms. Cushing's second graders created a Thankful Turkey booklet. The students wrote about what they are thankful for at home and at school.

CARDBOARD ARCADE at HARBOR HILL

Fifth graders in Ms. Liba Schwartz's class at Harbor Hill Elementary School learned that all you need to create an arcade is some cardboard boxes and tape! Working together in small groups over several weeks, students planned, designed, and built games for all their classmates to play and enjoy. Their games included a claw machine, a slam dunk game, a marble maze, and an air hockey table.

NO PLACE FOR HATE PLEDGE SIGNING

Both East Hills and Harbor Hill Elementary Schools are working toward an official No Place for Hate designation with gold star distinction. Students recently completed the first step in the process, which was having all students and staff sign the pledge to be a No Place for Hate school.

Roslyn High School pre-med students are benefitting from an immersive curriculum this academic year. Their pre-med course kicked off with a lecture/Q&A with Roslyn graduate Gabrielle Rood, now a 3rd year medical student, who shared her experiences thus far in medical school. In the weeks following, students had the opportunity to interact and learn from two local orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Michael Schwartz and Dr. Ari Goldman, who visited their classrooms to guest lecture on the human skeletal and muscle systems.

Roslyn High School introduced a new program called Mindfulness Days from November 16-18, 2022. It was presented by Mission Be, a mindfulness based educational program that trains students to better manage stress and regulate emotions. Mission Be founder and CEO Carin Winter hosted sessions with the junior class in the lower gym, leading games that initiated discussions surrounding stress, anxiety and inclusion.

On Wednesday, November 9, 2022, the Roslyn Athletic Department held a National Letter of Intent signing ceremony in the Roslyn High School cafeteria for senior Alex Gatto. He has committed to continue his athletic career playing lacrosse in Division I at the University of Michigan.

On Wednesday, November 9, 2022, Roslyn High School hosted the Tri-M Music Honor Society induction ceremony in the school auditorium. Nineteen new students, who satisfied rigorous entrance requirements, were welcomed into the school’s chapter of Tri-M, making a total of 43 members.

Roslyn High School’s Royal Crown Players staged three live performances of Peter and the Starcatcher from November 17 - 19, 2022, for the Roslyn community. The play, based on the novel Peter and the Starcatcher by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, is a prequel to Peter Pan. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew!
