Dear AUHSD Parents and Students:

On July 14, the Acalanes Union High School District Governing Board will again discuss the conditions and models for opening schools for the 2020-2021 school year. Open Session of this meeting will begin at 6:00 pm and will be held through the Zoom platform, which can be accessed through this link. The Board agenda will be available through this link tomorrow.

Early in the planning process, the following were established as the planning priorities: student and staff safety, high quality education, social-emotional well-being, access and equity, support and intervention, and to minimize disruption to community. These remain the priorities as we continue to follow health official guidance and orders, learn from successful practices and expert recommendations, and develop plans and solutions to meet the fluid and uncertain conditions.

Even as we experience the current surge in cases and hospitalizations in the region, we maintain the "goal of having students physically present in school" as the American Academy of Pediatrics advocates. But student and staff safety and risk reduction must remain our top priority.

Staff will present the latest plans for safety precautions, scheduling, physical distancing, student density reduction, hygiene and health monitoring, cleaning and disinfection, air circulation and quality, access and equity, special education, technology, learning management systems, food service, sports and extra-curricular activities among other topics for Board discussion. Descriptions of the program offering for parents who choose to keep their student in a distance learning structure even if our school buildings open for students will be presented.

We anticipate the Board will act to provide a tentative approval of a plan for the opening of the 2020-2021 school year during the meeting. Certainly, all plans will be subject to modification should health conditions or guidance change notably for better or worse.

No doubt, waiting for answers and managing expectations during these extraordinary times is quite challenging for all. Thank you for your patience and support.

Sincerely,

John Nickerson
Superintendent
