Our Call for Peace: Global Ceasefire and Military Spending Cuts
WILPF US calls for:
- a permanent extension of the current UN Global Ceasefire (unanimously approved by the UN Security Council on July 1 -- for only 90 days)
- a 50% be cut from the entirety of US military spending
The ONE WILPF Season of Solidarity Committee has prepared a resource guide about the UN Global Ceasefire and will share information on how to receive it. This is urgent due to the short deadline around the end of September.
Already, volunteers have begun a review of all US military spending to identify targeted items for the 50% to be cut -- with moving that money to human needs.
Get Connected with an Issue Committee!
Each of our national issue committees will welcome more members to help with making recommendations in the near future for actions all members can take to educate ourselves and to push for what military expenditures to cut and how and where to move the money -- out of wasteful military spending and into human needs. The dangerous and "unsupported" military spending could fund many programs:
◦ eliminating hunger,
◦ ending poverty,
◦ quality education,
◦ energy from renewable sources, and
◦ healthy ecosystems
In this way we can all support true US security and build a foundation for sustained and lasting peace.
Hear the Latest Updates
The Poor People's Campaign (PPC) has already developed a Moral Budget, with proposals for a 50% cut in the Defense Department budget alone. The WILPF US liaisons with the PPC will share information for members and branches about such proposals and actions in September and beyond.
Supporting Voting Rights for All and an Accurate Vote Count
Encouraging others to vote this fall is very important! And you can take action; if you missed the August 25 eAlert with information, see a link to it here.
Hoping you can join the call to talk together on Tuesday evening!
