Katherine Marshall Takes Center Stage
in Dodona Manor's Newest Exhibit
In July 2020, a handful of Marshall Center staff and volunteers met as an exhibit committee for the first time. The goal was to create an exhibit to tell the story behind the life and leadership of General Marshall’s wife, Katherine Tupper Marshall. Nine months later, that meeting has led to a new, beautiful display of informational panels and objects installed in the Haub Exhibit Room.

On a sunny April afternoon, members of the exhibit committee, Board of Directors, docent team and local community gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of “Grace & Grit: The Life and Leadership of Katherine Marshall.” The festivities officially began with a welcome from Marshall Center Executive Director Valérie Beaudoin, followed by Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk’s reflections on Katherine’s remarkable legacy.

They were then joined by members of the exhibit committee and the Town Council to cut the ribbon. The exhibit was officially opened, and several guests made their way to the Haub Room to view it for themselves.
“We’re fortunate to have a space in the house to display exhibits like this that highlight different aspects of the Marshall story,” said exhibit committee member Elizabeth Shannon. “It’s been a privilege to watch this project unfold from beginning to end, and I look forward to sharing Katherine’s story with all of our visitors and friends of the Marshall Center.”

A special thanks to our exhibit committee—Valérie Beaudoin, Tracy Coffing, Colette Fralen, Colleen Sherman, Elizabeth Shannon and Cody Youngblood—for the time and effort they put into bringing this exhibit to life.

“Grace & Grit” will be on display to any visitors touring the house for the next year, and we’re looking forward to hosting educational programs related to it.
Mary Catherine Santoro:
Katherine Marshall and Women's Education
One of the most valuable resources on the personal and contextual history of Katherine Marshall’s life is Mary Catherine Santoro’s piece, “First Lady of the Army: The Life and Times of Katherine Tupper Marshall.” Santoro’s work presents an informative, well-documented study not only of Katherine, but also on how her life compared and contrasted with that of other women in early- and mid-20th century. This proved to be an invaluable resource for our exhibit committee’s work on interpreting and presenting Katherine’s story through archival objects and informational panels.

On Sunday May 16, we’re delighted to host Ms. Santoro for our first “Grace & Grit” educational program. She will be discussing women’s education during the late-19th and early-20th centuries, when Katherine attended the Hollins Institute (now Hollins University) to pursue an eclectic degree (we can’t wait to ask about that major!). Stay tuned for more details.
Veterans Event
Meet Your Local Hero at Dodona Manor
Despite pandemic restrictions preventing in-person events (open house, parades, races, shows, station tours, etc.), Meet Your Local Hero was born. This partnership between the George C. Marshall International Center and the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue. Squad puts a spotlight on some of the heroes who live and work close to our home in Loudon County.

The partnership launched with a photo display recognizing Loudoun’s volunteer first responders at the Loudoun Government Center in December 2020 and January 2021. Escape Room Loco helped create Leesburg Hero Hunt (phase 2 of the effort), a family-friendly scavenger hunt designed to connect the squad with the community they serve.

The third phase (pandemic-permitting) will be an in-person, outdoor event on the grounds of Dodona Manor in October, where guests will learn about the squad, see the equipment it uses, meet its dedicated volunteers and learn about Leesburg’s most famous historic figure, our own George Marshall.
