A Note from President Frank James
Grant Opportunities for Missio
We recently submitted a proposal to the Lilly foundation for a $1,000,000 grant. This is a grant to create the Polis Center which is designed to equip church and lay leaders by providing educational programs that meet the practical needs of urban and suburban pastors. Polis will give special attention to programs and training opportunities for pastors, especially bi-vocational pastors, to thrive in ministry, to help churches diversify their revenue streams, and to afford Christian businesses the opportunity to live out their faith in the community.
We have received significant support from key Philadelphia leaders including:
  • Ed Rendell, the former governor of PA
  • Wilson Goode, the former mayor of Philly
  • Dana Redd, the former mayor of Camden
  • Rob Wonderling, the current President of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce
With support from such leaders, we are not guaranteed to receive the Lilly grant--but it sure does help.

Grant Received
We received a $50,000 planning grant from Lilly earlier this year and we used it in partnership with the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce to convene a series of focus groups with alums, pastors, non-profit and business leaders, community development corporations, the Social Enterprise Institute, and consultants. With the advice and counsel of these new and established friends, we designed three new certificate programs to equip and empower church and lay leaders to integrate faith, work and entrepreneurial skill for the flourishing of our community: The Certificate in Social Enterprise, The Certificate in Christian Entrepreneurship and The Certificate in Missional Business. This is a vision of theological education that goes beyond the classroom--it is where theology becomes praxis.

Please continue to pray for Missio.
God bless you.

Spreading Some Good News
Enjoy the third and final edition of our limited summer series, Missio on Mission, with Director of Strategic Relations, Wendy Walters (MDiv '22) and Pastor Clarence E. Wright, MA, MDiv, DMin. This series was designed to share some good news from the diverse perspectives of our alumni, students, faculty and staff as they briefly share how Missio impacts their journey in following Jesus into the world.
Missio Seminary invites you to attend a Virtual Open House featuring PULPIT (Program for Urban Leaders and Pastors in Transition). If you are seeking innovative ways to thrive personally and professionally as a pastor or urban leader in a COVID-driven era, then join us on one of the dates below.
PULPIT Graduate, Rev. Michael H. Lee, Jr.
Journeying thru this life can be overwhelming as one seeks to accomplish the ongoing tasks of meeting deadlines after deadlines. The feeling of, “I am obligated to do this and/or to do that” equally can weigh upon an individual's wellness. This includes the mental, emotional, physical, and yes, the spiritual health. Since becoming a student of Missio’s PULPIT program these elements of my life became more apparent and revealing to me. I will admit, it was tough to see that part of myself in itself, but the programs leadership cohorts and retreats have been institutional in bringing it to light!

I recently attended the Spring semester retreat, “Spiritual Formation & Self Care” in June 2021 which was rewarding and enriching for the soul. From the preached word from Dr. Pointer to our last session on Self-care by Dr. Michael Heath the retreat opened me up where I became self-transparent. It allowed me to see the areas where I am hard on myself, and what I lack in self-care. Each presenter was able to illuminate God’s word, which helped me gain an in-depth outlook of Jesus’ intention, especially when it came to rest. Studying out of the Gospels, we witnessed Jesus taking the time to rest prior to going forward to engage in ministry. Jesus is okay with us resting also!

When we are able to take a break and rest, then Jesus can and will get the best out of us...He will get the joy out of our lives!

I am grateful for this privileged opportunity to be part of Missio’s PULPIT program, in Jesus Name!

Blessings.
