Dear Friends,
This Sunday we celebrate the Transfiguration. The story is told in the synoptic gospels and in the second letter of Peter; Jesus, with three of his disciples, Peter, James and John go to the mountain to pray. While on the mountain, Jesus begins to shine with bright rays of light, is joined by the prophets Moses and Elijah and Jesus is called 'Son' by a voice in the sky.
I've always been intrigued by this miracle, as it is the only one that happens to Jesus, rather than done by Jesus. The Transfiguration is one of the five major milestones in Jesus' life along with his baptism, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension.
What makes this event so important is that, there, on the mountain, human nature meets God: humanity meets divinity, temporal meets eternal, with Jesus as the connection, the bridge, between the two.
Jesus is still a bridge for us. He is a bridge from death to life, a bridge from sin to redemption and from brokenness to wholeness. In the Transfiguration we hear God's voice asking for Jesus' followers to 'listen to him' and to become his followers.
I hope to see you all soon!
-George
