What do the GovCon Awards mean to Northern Virginia?

The 20th Annual Government Contractor Awards are almost here, sparking excitement and nostalgia throughout our region. We asked leaders what "GovCon" has meant to them:

"Founded in 2002 in the shadow of 9/11, the Greater Washington Government Contractor Awards have honored an industry that is vital to our society and its citizens for two decades," Rich LaFleur, Managing Partner, Grant Thornton

“The GovCon Awards for me has represented the coming together of a community, a community that serves the government, a common cause. It recognizes the people who operate in the shadows of the mission,” Ann Altman, CoFounder & Chief Executive Officer, Everyone Matters, Inc.

“When a company wins a GovCon award, it certainly shines a light on that organization and validates the good work that all the people are doing.” Kendall Holbrook, Chief Executive Officer, Dev Technology Group, Inc.

"Just being nominated, just getting that far, is a real honor for any company or individual,” Dr. William Vantine President & CEO, System Planning & Analysis, Inc.

“Nobody had done this, nobody had done it at that point. We just did it right the first time,” Craig Chason, Partner, Pillsbury.

Warner and Kaine Statement Regarding the Silver Line

From Senator Kaine's website:  "U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) released the following statement regarding the status of the Silver Line extension: “The United States government, the Commonwealth of Virginia, local governments, taxpayers and commuters have spent billions to construct a state-of-the-art Silver Line. It’s taken decades to realize the dream of Metro service to Dulles and now travelers along the corridor can see tracks, gleaming new stations, and test trains moving along the route. All that remains is for WMATA and the Safety Commission to get their acts together and remember that they are not in existence to wage turf battles but to serve the transportation needs of area residents. We are making it clear to both agencies: it’s time to get this done.”

National Apprenticeship Week Reception

November 15th | 3:30-5:30PM | 2020 K Street, NW, Washington, DC 20006

Join us as the Greater Washington Apprentice Network celebrates National Apprenticeship Week with a reception on November 15th. This in-person event will be a wonderful opportunity to connect with current and prospective GWAN employers, non-profits, and education partners, as well as some of our network’s current rising star apprentices.

GWAN brings together employers, academic institutions, public and private sectors. Employers gain access to best practices from organizational peers, sources of prospective apprentice candidates, support services, academic institutions, and training resources. Apprenticeships offer an opportunity to “earn and learn,” meaning that employees receive needed on-the-job training while still earning a living. While some skills are well suited to be developed within an educational environment, others, including soft skills such as team building and leadership, can best be developed within the workplace. Through apprentice programs, Employers can impart key skills and train workers in their own methods and techniques, the cost of which can be recovered through employee loyalty and retention, providing the kind of workplace the 21st century workforce expects: diverse, inclusive, collaborative, and innovative.

Although enacted in July 2021, many Northern Virginia employers may not be aware the maternity benefit for disability related to childbirth was expanded to 12 weeks. Disability plans written after 7/1/21 must cover 12 weeks. Policies written prior to 7/1/21 can be updated when ready. In this marketplace, it might be wise to update your policy to be competitive.
