Dear AUHSD Parents and Guardians:

As we wrap up the school year tomorrow and pause to enthusiastically celebrate our seniors in their commencement ceremonies next week, we know our extraordinary COVID-19 challenges continue.

We are seeking input from our parent stakeholders to inform our leadership team and working groups that are designing models for our schools in August and considering the greatest areas of concern and areas for improvement. While the guidance we get from our State and Contra Costa County public health officials will drive our decision-making, we also anticipate there will be many local decisions and a degree of autonomy with school models and program delivery. Your input is critical.

Please take the time to complete the survey below. It will ask you to share your concerns moving forward and also to reflect on your current and recent experience as a parent with our distance learning program. The survey is due by the end of the day on Monday, June 1. We will then follow with a more open-ended opportunity for parent input through a digital crowd-sourcing problem-solving platform. We will communicate with our parent community on Monday evening regarding that additional input opportunity.

We hope to formally establish our model for opening the school year by mid-summer. In the short term, we will give an outline of our process and preliminary thoughts next week at the June 3 Governing Board meeting and a more definitive plan for reopening at the June 17 meeting.  We will continue to communicate updates and solicit input throughout the summer months.

We are forming five working groups to address issues and challenges and to contribute to the development of our plan for safe reopening in the 2020-2021 school year. We will keep our community updated on the plan as it develops. The working groups will be
  • Learning - which will address educational program and academic support delivery in different scenarios ranging from those permitting physical school opening to requiring continued distance learning (technology, access and equity will be part of this group)
  • Wellness - which will address and develop programs to support mental health and student connection as well as issues pertaining to hygiene, sickness and health in a variety of scenarios
  • Operations - which will address PPE, cleaning, food service, transportation, general safety and ongoing service delivery in a variety of scenarios
  • Office Support - which will focus on office support services and systems of support and delivery in the school and central offices in a variety of scenarios
  • Governance - which will focus on coordination, communication, policy and implementation
Please let me know if you have any questions. We hope you will take the time to take the survey.

Take care and stay well.

Sincerely,

John Nickerson
