The Conservancy is thrilled to be able to offer in-person cleanups to celebrate Earth Day 2022. Cleanup events will be taking place April 22 and April 23, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and groups will be assigned their own stretch of the Charles River Basin to cleanup. We hope you will join us for a safe and fun way to get outside and give back to the parks that have given us so much!

Interested in helping care for the parks and ecosystems along the Charles? The Charles River Conservancy is starting a volunteer stewardship program called C.R.E.W. (Charles River Environmental Watch) and is searching for people interested in helping out! The CRC recorded a community story at the Lynch Family Skatepark last month to be included in the Jukebox at the Cambridge Foundry, an innovative audio archive that stocks an old jukebox with unique community voices. We are thrilled to spotlight our partners at the Solomon Foundation. With the mission of creating a greener Greater Boston for future generations, the Foundation champions public green spaces and their unique contribution to the quality of urban life. Over the years, we have been grateful to work with them on a variety of projects, including at Allston’s Herter Park, and most recently around the DCR Special Commission.

Zoe Leff (she/her) is our newest Northeastern co-op pursuing a B.A. in Environmental Studies. She is interested in bettering the overall mental health of communities through improved access to green spaces and in utilizing social media as a platform for climate education. At the CRC, she works on many projects, from helping put on volunteer events to working on our communications and social media. In her free time, you might find her thrift shopping or playing the flute in Northeastern's Concert Band! Head to her bio on our website for more on Zoe.

In January, MassDCR filed an Environmental Notification Form (ENF) with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) regarding the Memorial Drive Reconstruction, changing the planned redesign from 2.2 miles to 0.8 miles. The CRC submitted comments to Stantec regarding the ENF and proposed design commending the road diet and making recommendations on plans for tree protection, cyclist and pedestrian paths, and removal of invasive species.

CEO of Ceres Mindy Lubber argues that the state is falling behind the deadline to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. With new federal infrastructure money coming, Massachusetts has the opportunity to make headway in reducing carbon pollution by investing in cutting transportation pollution with projects like the I-90 Allston Multimodal Project.
