Genesis News and Notes
August 12, 2021
Hey y'all!

Are you ready for some football?!?! Yes, it's the time of year for training camps, preseason games, fantasy football drafts, marching band practices, and all the other excitement that goes with Friday night lights, dreams of college football playoffs, and Super Bowl ambitions. Will this be the year the Cowboys finally get back to an NFC championship game? Will North Crowley HS make the playoffs? How awkward will it be for Texas and Oklahoma in the Big 12 this year after the news they are moving to the SEC?

Some of you are football fans and are tracking everything in the above paragraph. Some of you are probably not fans and wondering what I'm talking about! Either way, I [Paul] think there are some important lessons football can teach us about faith and being the church. So the next couple of weeks, we are going to talk about "How Faith is Like Football" - and have some fun along the way! Everyone is invited to come to worship wearing the gear of your favorite football team(s). Look forward to seeing you in worship!

Grace & Peace,
Pastors Amber & Paul

PS. On a different subject, please note that the next "Dreamin' & Schemin'" zoom conversation about modern worship is moved to Tuesday, 8/17 at 7pm. Continue reading below to find the link to join us.
Health & Safety Reminders

As COVID-19 positivity rates In Tarrant County return to substantially high levels, we want to remind you of our health & safety measures at Genesis. We strongly encourage you to wear a mask in the building and during worship- both vaccinated and unvaccinated persons. We continue to have plenty of space for social distancing, including our side sections which are marked.

If you are not fully vaccinated for whatever reason, including children under the age of 12, we urge you to wear a mask in the building. We also encourage you to consider getting the vaccine, if you are eligible.

Unfortunately, most of the current cases are among unvaccinated persons. However, the CDC does caution that even vaccinated people can be carriers of variants of the coronavirus. Therefore, if you have been exposed to anyone with confirmed COVID-19 or the variants, we urge you to get tested and follow the CDC guidelines for isolation. If you feel sick, please join us online for worship. We will continue to monitor the situation and make updates as needed.

Music Moments
This Sunday, an ensemble from our chancel choir will lead the congregational hymn “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.” In the service we will look at how faith is a battle, and the abbreviated story that follows about that hymn certainly exemplifies this concept. I often think about how much our ancestors had to endure, all the while remaining faithful to Jesus and passing that heritage to us!

In 1858 a great city-wide revival swept across the city of Philadelphia. One of the most powerful ministers participating in this revival was 29-year-old Dudley Tyng. Tyng also began holding noonday services at the downtown YMCA and on March 30, 1858, five thousand men were in attendance to hear him preach from Exodus 10:11 - “Go now ye that are men and serve the Lord.” - and that day over 1000 of them committed their lives to Christ and His service. During that sermon he also remarked that he would rather lose his right arm than come short of his duty to deliver God’s message.

Unbelievably, the next week while visiting in the country, his sleeve got caught in a corn thrasher, his arm was severely lacerated, and the main artery was severed. Four days later he developed further infection and on April 19, 1858, he died from shock and a great loss of blood. At his death bed, his final whispered words were “Let us all stand up for Jesus.”

I certainly don’t believe that God caused the accident to happen, but perhaps Tyng had allowed God to influence what he said at the YMCA service so that others would remember his final charge to them. Likewise, because of the nature of his death, the friend who wrote the words for “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus” was profoundly influenced by Tyng’s final words. Who knows what greater resolution can come from tragedy or hardship? Our task is to remain faithful to the end.

See you Sunday!

Phone Problems

The church office is experiencing technical difficulties with the phone system. If you have tried calling the office after hours you have experienced this issue. Please be patient with us as we work through this problem. If you call the church office during the day, and don't get through, please try again. Currently, the voice mail system isn't working, nor is the rollover feature which allows us to receive more than one phone call at a time. Generosity Notes
Memorial Fund

The Memorial Fund allows you to remember or honor a person or event by providing funds for a current ministry of the church. To offer a memorial or honor gift, you may contact the church, mark a gift accordingly or go to our website, www.genesisumc.com
Genesis offers electronic giving, which allows you to make donations on a scheduled, automatic basis. To set up electronic contributions, (checking or savings account or credit or debit card) you can come by the church office and complete an authorization form or go to the church website and give online.

Another great way to give is with a quick text message! Simply send a text to 817-697-2824 with the amount you would like to contribute. Make sure to include the dollar sign before the amount. Within a few minutes, you’ll be sent a text with a link to register. Once your registration is complete you will receive a text verification and a receipt via email.

It is important to know that we can depend on financial support from our congregation members to continue the missions that Genesis provides to so many, as we go through the summer, fall and upcoming holidays.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Troy Chapman at 817-292-4551 or email him at troy@genesisumc.com.

Thank you for supporting Genesis!
