New from the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse!

November is upon us - what better time of year to  reflect on being kind to each other and teaching our children to be kind. Empathy is a trait  children learn from the adults in their lives and having children  volunteer to help others  provides  the opportunity to develop empathy and kindness for others. This month, we provide dads and father figures with some tips and ideas for starting a family tradition of volunteering. For programs, we share some resources to implement volunteer programs for fathers and children in local communities.

For Dads

It's Thanksgiving: Teaching Children to Give
November is a time when families gather together to celebrate and give thanks. However, some individuals do not have family or the means to celebrate. Consider volunteering with your kids to teach them the gift of giving and start a family tradition that will help others and be passed down for many years to come. Check out these tips for volunteering as a family activity.

November is National Adoption Month, established to raise awareness about the urgent need for adoptive families for children and youth in foster care.   Approaching Fatherhood: A Guide for Adoptive Dads and Others  is written for prospective and practicing adoptive fathers and describes the role of men in the adoptive family.

For Programs

The following resources are geared toward programs to help in building empathy and kindness with dads and their children.

This tip sheet provides fathers five guideposts for how parents can cultivate empathy in their children.
Empathy is at the heart of what it means to be human and it's key to  preventing bullying and many other forms of cruelty. Programs can use this resource to start  conversations  with fatherhood groups on how empathy is the foundation for acting ethically, for good relationships of many kinds, for loving well, and for professional success.

This journal article investigates Dads Tuning In to Kids, a new seven-session group program targeting paternal emotion-socialization practices, which are related to children's social and emotional functioning. Results showed that fathers statistically increased in empathy, encouragement of emotion expression, and parenting efficacy, and decreased in emotion-dismissing beliefs, dismissive reactions to children's negative emotions, and hostile parenting responses, which ultimately resulted in improved child behavior.

This agency leads service, volunteering, and grant-making efforts in the United States. Local programs can find service opportunities in their communities to collaborate and identify volunteer opportunities for fathers and children in their communities. They work hand-in-hand with local partners to tap the ingenuity and can-do spirit of the American people to tackle our country's most pressing challenges.
