Where in the world was the first nuclear weapon exploded? No, not Hiroshima.
The first nuclear bomb -- called Trinity -- was exploded off a tower in south central New Mexico on July 16, 1945.
Hear about the effects of that
highly secret event on the people downwind from the area. Learn how New Mexico has become the most nuclear-contaminated state in the country
, with uranium mining, nuclear research facilities, and nuclear waste storage! New Mexico's state government is in many ways
controlled by the nuclear weapons and waste industries.
We're honored to host Tina Cordova, a founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium (TBDC), and a cancer survivor
, to talk about the New Mexico downwinders' fruitless struggle (so far) to receive the compensation due to those exposed to radiation from atomic weapons testing and uranium mining under the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA).
Our second speaker is Joni Arends is Co-founder and Executive Director of
Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety (CCNS) in Santa Fe, New Mexico.Since 1988, she has been a leading voice against the nuclear weapons industry in New Mexico, including Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
Please visit our
1945 Timeline entry for
July 16 for an extensive description of the Trinity bomb test.
We suggest that you view this video sometime before our webinar:
The Moment in Time: The Manhattan Project (available NOW on You Tube)
. It documents the development of nuclear weapons up to the Trinity explosion through recollections of those who worked on what was known as "the gadget." This film and our webinar are the opening events of a
war-and-nuclear-weapons discussion series sponsored by Physicians for Social Responsibility, WILPF
US, and the Vermont International Film Festival. Please join us for some or all of the seven discussions of seven films included in this series, concluding on Sunday, August 9.
